    hey guys i recieved my 8510p about two weeks ago, and i noticed the screen was pretty bright, just about decent. not only that, it is really grainy. the sparkly whites is really noticable, i can almost see every little grain, the colours are not really smooth especially white. i also notice the screen is some what dimmer, i don't know if its just me but thats what it seems. i have a quanta screen, its suppose to be better than the samsung from what i've heard but its totally not the case. how are you guys with your 8510p screen? any one of the same dilemma as me and what screen do you guys have? i am clearly dissapointed, but i am optimistic and other than that 8510p is a great notebook.

    That's one laptop on top of my list or buying. I've been interested in getting a wide viewing angle matte screen for office work& movies with my family/ friands around. I'm glad to see more reviews on this topic. Sorry for your experience. Have you tried an external monitor/ TV? You have an HDMI port.
    Hope others can give some input on the screen issues.

    cjn i hope i didn't scare you away from this great laptop. just like jerry said maybe i just one of the unlucky ones. i dont think its such a big problem, the colours are really vibrant, just that the white isnt really smooth. as for the brightness, the max is pretty decent not as bright as lets say the mac or the sony's but its still decent. unless your one of those people who need everything to be the way they desire, you will be very pleased with this laptop. Remember this is an isolated case not all the 8510p are the same as mine. anyways Goodluck with your purchase!

    Just curious, who's the manufacturer of your screen?

    If you want to find out, go to the Control panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager button. From there, expand the "Monitors" tree and double click "Plug and Play Monitor". In the dialog box that opens, click on the details tab. Make sure the drop down menu says "Device Instance Id" The ID should look like this:
    "Display\xxx****\...............
    Where "xxx" is the 3-letter code for who made your display. Just post what that 3 letter code is, and me or someone will tell you what brand of display you have. I wouldn't be surprised if it were an SEC/Samsung display. That brand isn't exactly the highest quality when it comes to LCD Displays.

    I've also got a Quanta, same numbers. It seems slightly less bright than other 8510p screens I've seen but my colours are great and there's no graininess. So yeah I'd say talk to HP and get a new one. Their business support (with easily identifiable problems such as screen issues) appears to be quite good.

    A few people on these forums have replaced their screens and it's turned out fine I believe.

    Hey, tim!
    you might want to check ebay for screens ~$150-200, i believe the wsxga would be more expensive ! i am not decided yet for this laptop, looking at hp 6710, which is cheaper, and has the same screen. you should have a "wide viewing angle" on it. how does it look like when lots of people are around, watching a movie?

    Is your color set to 24/32-bits under Windows Display?

    If it's within 30 days, I think you can go to either one. But you'd have to check your reseller return FAQ. Some only accept returns if the machine is DOA--if you explain the screen is really messed up and not usable they might say OK though.
    Otherwise just give HP a ring and go from there.

    Post the 3-letter code here, and me or someone else here will tell you.

    A quick list:

    SEC = Samsung
    AUO = AU Optronics
    QDS = Quanta
    LPL = Lg/Phillips (?)

    I've got a CMO in my 8510p. Seems a bit grainy, but this is my first matte screen. Overall I'm extremely happy with this notebook.

    I've started a thread previously regarding the same issue on my 8510p, except my screen is the dreaded Samsung.

    Here's the thread I started, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=192232.

    I strongly suggest that you contact HP directly about this. They told me that the 8510p is part of a special quality control program, and they are offering a rapid 48 hour cross shipment exchange program on it. Mine is taking longer because it's a custom order.

    I'm supposed to be getting my replacement soon, and they told me that it would not be a Samsung screen this time, but now that I see you've had a problem with the Quanta, I'm still worried. I'll update everyone when I get my new replacement unit.

    Please contact HP directly, and then let us know how things go for you.

    Guys, he's not talking about anything that has to do with color settings or external monitors or whatever. The sparkle is caused by the antireflective coating or one of the layers making up the panel itself.

    QDS :) Love the colours :) For me the screen is too bright on 100% but 60% is a bit too dim.

    cebolao, congratulations on the new notebook.

    I can't help you with your problem, but I suggest contacting Asus tech support, which as I've mentioned before, I've found to be excellent.

    Please start a new thread in the Asus forum if you can't find another more appropriate thread there, but his is not the thread for your post.

    hey ackeron thanks for the advice, tomorrow i am going to explain hp my problem and hopefully i will get reimburse with a new one. The whites seem to be dirty and not smooth and with very small dark spots that are visible to the eye of closely analyzed. Also the wide viewing angle of the laptop is very acceptable. if you turn it 60 to the left or right, text are really clear to see, although the colour is washed out, but in my opinion it is one of the better laptops for wide viewing, meaning cjn you will have a lot of friends coming over for movies! sorry for the late reply, i was busy with exams.
