I had to buy a replacement HP AC adapter because the original one stopped working. So I went out and bought the HP 90w AC/Auto/Air Smart Adapter (The box says 8510p is compatible).

When I plug in the laptop, the touchpad seems to go out of whack and jumps around at times. When I remove the AC power, the touchpad works perfectly.

There are a couple of differences written on the back of the adapters:

    Output (Original Adapter): 19V / 4.74A
    Output (Replacement): 19.5V / 4.62A

It is an Authentic HP replacement part (KS474AA #ABA / 481197-002). Anyone know why there is this issue? Thanks.

Could be ESD. Kindly check your grounding connection.

Where do I check this? Where is the grounding connection located?

Just as an FYI... This did not happen with the original AC Adapter.

how many pins your old adaptor have and your new adaptor. Normally the plug with 3 pins have one pin connected to the ground. 2 pins don't have any grounding connection. or you could try to change the sensitivity of your touchpad when plugged in.

life saver. i just had my 8530w go off for repair so im using my 8510w. when i did have my 8530w i could use the 8510w charger althought its not ideal when u needed full power from the laptop but good otherwise. so now im using my 8510w and using the 8530w charger in it thinkin it be fine. then im noticing erractic behaviour. no idea why as i had only reinstalled it and it was fine. so baffled out my mind thought id look up erratic toucpad 8510w and this thread was in search. i read it and thought to check if the adapter was the problem....it is. The problem is that the charger in my 8530w i assume is too much cos im now using the original and its working fine.

im glad i checked cos i was gonna make a phone call to hp and i ONLY just had my 8530w collected few mins prior to typing this.

vips, I would ask where you have it plugged in when you have the erratic operation? (you say it is an AC/auto/air/etc)

IMHO, the power supply in the laptop should be able to handle the slight increase in voltage and decrease in amperage that you illustrate between the two, but ....

You could try another at a store to see if it is only that one unit ...

Get another original one to confirm good operation, which would answer my but at the end of para #2.

I don't think it's got anything to do with the output of the power bricks. I think the new one is of worse quality and sending too much noise/ripple to the machine.
