I've asked similar question on "what to buy" forum, although maybe this forum is more suitable, so sorry for repeating. I’m looking for notebooks for my company. I’m thinking about:

    8510p (GB956EA) - price in Poland ca. USD 2.295
    T7700
    2GB
    2600HD
    160GB 5400 RPM

    or

    8510w (GC112EA) - price ca. USD 2.222
    T7500
    2GB
    FX 570M
    120GB 7200 RPM

Price almost the same (8510w is ca. 70 USD cheaper).

Any advice? Mainly business programs, occasional gaming. Has higher RPM infulence on shorter work battery?

It should, but by not much. Besides the HDD, you might want to see the power consumption of the 2600 vs the FX.

Don't worry, the "what to buy" section is full of people that will try to force you to buy a cheap notebook just because they themselfs are cheap.

The HP 8510p will have a bit better battery life with the HD 2600, like 30+ mins depending on the usage.

Also, does the "w" version come with on-site warranty in Poland? If so, that might be important too..

if in terms of private buyers, not companies, then yes they both come with such a warranty (full normal 3yrs long hp on-site warranty).

The "p" models don't come with a on-site warranty, it's only the "w" models that do.

According to HP Poland they both came with the same warranty – it’s 3 years but not on-site.

The strange thing is that 8510w comes only with English version of Vista (HP is not going to change it in the nearest future). I wonder if it is going to cause problems when using eg. Polish version o MS Office.

The most important question is which would be faster in everyday business use (8510p – faster CPU; 8510w faster HDD better GPU) I would also like them to last at least 3 years (probably is the nearest time we are gone to replace them in my company) it’s going to be desktop replacement so is has to be reliable. I had some problems with my private NC6120 after 2 years.

8510p has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600

8510w has NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M

OK, if the warranty is the same, then just decide if you want to have a slightly better video card or slightly better battery life...

You aren't going to use some 3D modeling OpenGL applications since you didn't mention, right?

I heard a lot of good things about FX570M and about some problems with ATI. We wouldn’t like to spend time on fixing computer problems in my company. Could somebody say how ATI works? Are there any driver problems?

Some people had some driver problems before, but I haven't heard anything recently... You can make another thread asking about that, put it in the title, so that you get more replies...

I dunno, I use those at work from time to time and I haven't had any problems but then again I don't use them all the time...so I can't comment on the drivers.

I would recommend the w, since it has faster HDD. It would open documents faster, not sure whether that is important to you or not. But the battery life will be a bit shorter.

All the P model GPU problems have basically been fixed, so everyone else in here is right--it comes down to faster gpu/hdd vs more battery life.

If you're going to be doing a lot of traveling then the P model might be better so you can get more use out of it before the battery dies. If the units are just going to travel throughout the office or two and from buildings/airports etc then the W model would be better overall.

I chose the W as I cannot twiddle my thumbs while waiting for ATI to learn how to make video drivers for Linux.

I’m not going to use Linux. After some thinking I will probably choose p version. Mainly due better battery running, faster CPU and Polish version of Vista. I don’t need workstation GPU. I don’t use programs like Maya or SolidWorks. Although we will see how availability looks. I heard there are some problems with getting 8510p in Poland.
