How much better will the 8510p handle games over the dv6500t? Secondly, do you get 64-bit Vista included when you order a 8510p?

The 8510p will be able to easily outperform the dv6500t. It even has a 3Dmark06 score that's about 2.5 times better. If you're thinking about gaming, the 8510p is the one to get. Neither system will come with 64 bit Vista without making it a custom order. The default is the 32 bit version as far as I know. If you can afford it, I'd easily choose the 8510p over the dv6500t. It is simply the better laptop in all regards.

I had the same question so I asked the reseller I was going to buy the laptop from (EuclidComputers). (I was looking at a 8510p too). I asked them to give me a list of the formats the drive supported, and their reply was:

Hope that's helped :). (DL stands for Dual Layer)

Yes :). The model in question is the Compaq 8510p RM269UT#ABA. This is the lowest spec version, so it's safe to say all the other 8510p models will have at least DL also.

Does that model come with 32/64-bit versions of Vista or only 32-bit?

I purchased RM269UT#ABA and received Vista 32 and 64 bit.

There is no difference between 269 and 303 other than OS; I called HP to ask and they confirmed it.

    Thanks.

Does it give you a choice when you boot up for the first time if you want to run 32-bit or 64-bit?

It gave me no choice; I believe they come factory installed with 32-bit and you have to reload from scratch if you want 64.

    Ackeron,

Did yours have MS Office installed?

I got mine yesterday and when I turned it on I had to pick Vista Business 32bit or 64bit. Then an automated process, took about an hour to install vista and HP software. When I finally got into Vista (which I'm new to), I noticed most of MS Office is installed.

    Thanks,
    Jamison

I believe mine did have Office at first boot...when I wiped I lost it. I think the HP drivers CD comes with an Office 2007 trial though.

When i booted my 8510p for the first time it gave me the option of 32bit or 64bit. I went for 64bit and wasn't asked for any cds etc. With my laptop I received the vista business 32bit & 64bit disks, as well as a copy of windows XP.

    Thanks for the replies.

It seems you get the option of selecting 32-bit or 64-bit when you first boot up. Will you be given the same option again if you were to perform a complete system restore?

I did first boot my laptop at around 1am so you guys are doubtless right about the 32 or 64 bit option :p

If you do a system restore you just use whichever version you want and that's it I think.

So which one is generally better, 32 or 64 bit for the most common applications...or won't there be a difference?

32-bit is supported by all applications, sometimes 64-bit is not supported or there are no drivers.

64-bit has faster hard drive access and support 4gb RAM, but you will already know if you need that.

    Jamison

PS. "all" is a big word. it's probably 99.9% of applications support 32-bit.
