after all the comments from people on the forum, i realized that getting xp pro was the best solution, however, stockfor the 8510p with windows xp is virtually impossible to find for a good price. stock for the vista business model however are numerous. i was wondering, if i were to get that one instead, how would i go about installing xp in it? what would i need? how much would i expect to spend?

The vista one should be priced the same as the XP one, right? Unless you're saying that you want to order one that's currently in stock?

some people still prefer to use XP. Although most major software developers have vista ready versions of their software out. but for non corporate users some can be a really expensive upgrade.

Adobe acrobat professional 7 for example, doesn't work in vista and you need version 8. CS 2 is also apparently slower in Vista, i think the old autodesk softwares are also not compatible.

having said when i buy i will opt for vista business.

ah so i should just wait for the xp computers to get back in stock? and not just buy the vista ones in stock now? because im assuming it would be expensive buying an xp disc once i have the vista computer in order to downgrade it

Get the Vista Business model and then call up HP and tell them you would like to downgrade to XP per the terms of the EULA. They will send you an OEM HP branded XP Pro installation disk and an additional drivers disk. You can't use both XP and Vista at the same time on the machine (dual boot) but you can restore your system to Vista once all of you applications are compatible and you are ready. More info is available in this doc published by microsoft.

    Sorry!

I'm 99% sure though that if you give microsoft a call they'll send you out a copy of WinXP with a key for very little/no money when you have already got a copy of windows business.
