Hello!
I have a HP8510p with 1 2gb chip in it. I'm thinking of upgrading to 4gb total but I was wondering if there were any disadvantages going with non HP ram. I'm looking for DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM PC2-5300 2gb at the moment. Is this correct?

NEVER!!! NEVER!!! buy RAM from the manufacturer it is a complete rip off get the minimum amount of RAM and buy 4GB off newegg or at FRYS.
And yes DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM PC2-5300 is the right type of RAM. -

jooeee's right, no reason at all to buy from hp
you can buy it cheaper and in many cases, better quality from newegg, tiger, etc.
find the best price and go for it.......... -
Just avoid G.SKILL memory, and find a brand that offers a lifetime warranty.
HP memory is an absolute rip off, especially since they use generic bull-crap vendors. -
