Hi , a long time ago a bought a hp nw8420 and i totally loved that machine. After that i upgraded to the nw8440 and i was pretty disappointed. The Display is very dim and the fan runs very often and is pretty loud. A friend owns an IBM t61p with a 1920x1200-Display and compared to the display of the nw8440 its a _lot_ brighter.
So how is the display of the 8510w? Is it also dim? And how loud is the 8510w?

    Thanks

The display on my 8510w is very bright, much brighter than the nc8430 I have, but I have the WSXGA resolution.
The fan runs all the time on AC due to the stupid way it was designed, but on battery power, it turns off properly. I find the fans quieter than the nc8430, but the T61 probably has even quieter fans.

I received my 8510w last Friday - noise - compared to my old laptop its quieter and there is an option in the bios to stop the fan from being on all the time on AC. So far this has worked for me.

When I initially got the laptop the screen seemed washed out and was hard to view on battery power but excellent on AC. After playing around with the power options I realised that the default HP settings has the display brightness set to less than half when on battery. I increased the brightness to about 3/4 and now its great both on AC and battery.

The fan is definitely loud under load, noticeably louder than the T61p, but HP has a history for fan issues so...

The WUXGA screens are 200 nits, and there are two manufacturers that make them -- Samsung and LG/Philips (haven't seen this one for a while), so you will get the Samsung screen most likely... the same screen used in the ThinkPad T61p and Dell Latitude D830 (check out the reviews about these notebooks).

Here are some benchmarks (from Notebookcheck) about the new 8510w and the old nc8430 (nw8440)...

On my 8710W the screen is superb. I have watched Pirates: At Worlds End and Casino Royale in Blu-Ray and the picture was great. I have also played Cain and Lynch and that is when the fan kicks in and its very audible. After about 30-60 seconds after I stop playing the game the fan dies down and it silent again.

I am so glad I bought this unit [IMG]
