It's sad that many of the first batch of Elitebook suffer from QC issues. If they had simply turned it on and done a simple hardware test, they would have noticed the problem. Seems like HP's customer service is really shoddy in North America, and that's funny seeing how they are an American company. I've had very pleasant service from them in the Asia Pacific region but they are quite slow to respond. It seems they are very under-staffed at the moment.

Hopefully you'll have these sorted out. The 8530w demo I tried out was pretty pleasant, apart from the screen seeming to have something inside putting pressure against it. I see ripple effects on the screen when I flip the lid open.

Yea, I am totally happy with the computer other than this problem. Their support is brutal though. I have done what I can do now. I talked to several HP staff on the phone, written an unhappy email to customer support. So now I am going to just deal directly with the reseller, since HP Canada is useless.

I am a 8510p owner living in Ottawa at the moment. I would strongly advise using the HP ITRC, I submitted a case for a keyboard and battery replacement on Friday morning, after a few emails to verify the problem, the parts were shipped same day via UPS express and arrived on Monday morning. The part was shipped from near Toronto.

Update: So no computer replacement, HP Canada will not stock my model (KS052UA) Until late Jan which is too late. The speakers are on back order with no idea when arrival time is. So I think my best option is to wait until in australia and get the speaker part replaced there. Opinions? Another option, does anyone know what speaker model is in these things, I'll get it and get the technician to do it himself. Im tempted to buy another 8530w, rip the thing apart, take the speakers out, and put them in mine haha... unfortunately, not an option.. Help please

I suggest that you file a support case via ITRC so it can be tracked and the parts can be easily ordered and delivered to Australia so they can be ready for you when you're there. HP uses global support facilities, so they can track this case wherever you are. Australia isn't some backward country with no support channels. If anything, they are probably more extensive than the ones in NA due to their proximity to Singapore, HP's AP regional HQ, distribution and production facility. HP operates an extensive support network throughout Australia and they are the largest commercial PC vendor there.

HP business notebooks are only sold through limited channel partners and they rarely have any higher end models on display. You can probably try Harris Technology ( www.ht.com.au) as they have the biggest range of corporate PCs on retail.

Just so you know, if the problem still isn't fixed, you can and should request for a replacement with an equivalent or better unit. If you press hard enough, they should be able to replace it with anything they have in stock, even if it's a better spec'ed unit. Get a case manager.

Chrixx,, thanks for the advice and I am one step ahead of yea. I called the reseller said that i need a full replacement, since mine is sold out everywhere in canada, I want a better model. Between HP and them, they have came up with a better unit with blueray and 250gb harddrive. If everything goes smooth, I should have it monday, thats if it goes well lol.

Just the standard HP 3 year warranty. But to get a new and better computer it took, a faulty first computer sent, 3 weeks waiting for a part that did not fix the problem, the reseller (CDW) standing up for me the whole time, me calling HP non stop, and my current computer (KS052UA) being sold out in Canada everywhere, oh and my limited time schedule for me moving to Australia for a year in about a week. It wasn't an easy thing thats for sure, but its the least I would expect for them dropping the ball on this one. Oh well, hopefully the new one arrives Monday, works fine and I am good to go.

Update: New computer is here. So far works great. Speakers still crackle a little when bass is in the music, but at this point, i dont care, a few logitech speakers will fix the problem. Other than that, pretty happy, still have to try out the blueray.

Is there anyway that you can see these notebooks before buying them?

Ordering a notebook, waiting for it to arrive, possibly being disappointed and having to send it back, is not really convenient and a waste of time and money (for shipping).

I would really like to see the notebook before buying it. Seeing the notebook in person REALLY makes a difference in your decision to purchase it or not.

I think it depends on where you live. Where I do they are only available through official channel partners and they have no showrooms so there is no such possibility.

That was my worry too. I had never seen an HP business pc, so I had no idea what it would be like when it arrived. In Canada I dont know of anywhere to see them.. So far the computer is great, a little crackle, but the blueray is crystal clear. The joker never looked so detailed before. I can tell you, for a pc, it is beautiful. I think it has the most solid finishes i have seen, well other then the new macs, but lets not go there haha

has any one worked out how to stop the noisey fan going off constantly without losing performance in the 8530w/p? it doesnt do much difference when i turn fan off from always on cos it still sounds pretty much loud.

I don't find the fan too loud at all so no problems here. I do find the space bar sticks every so often, and the odd speaker crackle, thats all for me

Update: So I got my new Elitebook replacement. Now with 250gb HD, 4gb Ram and a blueray burner. The space bar would click funny and stick a little, but after being disspointed in the Canadian HP service, I waited until i was in Australia. I called in from here, for a replacement keyboard, and the next day, it was replaced. Perfect service. The only issue i have is sometimes when i open the screen, the little magnetic clip in the base sticks down and i have to close it and open it again to be fixed, but after calling HP, its a standard problem, not one fixed by a technician. So no worries.

its the 7200 rpm drive which im quite aware can be louder. but i also noticed at the time i was using pre installed xp but installed vista to see wei scores and noticed it was quieter and not as hot.

Can you actually feel wind coming out of the left vent? I've had the 8530w for awhile and the fan doesn't always come on, though I've noticed quite a few users talking about this fan always on issue.

I can if i check for it. but its not noticeable really. i dont really mind the fan noise infact cos its not THAT loud as i expected when its using maximum performance. Temps are reasonable also.

    core 1 : 80C
    core 2 : 81C
    GPU : 79-85C

I have not undervolted this yet. as i wanted to check the difference between it with undervolt. im sure the Fan noise will pretty much be the same with lower temps but just less heat.

Wow , that is hot !! Mine never goes over 58c running at 1005 for 8 hours . Ithink they put too much thermal paste on the CPU and GPU at the factory , When I first got the laptop temps were in the 70's at 100% CPU use , after undervolting it went down to 60's , after changing paste and undervolting 58c is the max it gets , usually 53-55c running orthos . And that is with the x-900 0 , not the t-7500 comp came with .

Ah yes its kinda hot but i had changed theGPU drivers and using 9600gt which although temps usually stay in the 70s for both cpu and gpu. thats the peaks ive seen it stay at using maximum performance.

i have owned the 8510p and the ATIs' tend to be cooler. so its understandable for you to say its hot. i have undervolted it before reinstalling it and everything was in the 60s. but i was convinced it was slowing the gpu thus the lower temp meaning i less frames.
Im going to try RM clock again to save my delicate machine from contiuous heat or it one day will over heat beyond 80+ degrees and cooks itself to death.

Hey has anyone undervolted there 8530w and then overclocked the gpu? if so what kinda temps occur after?

My temperatures in 8530w with FX770 are similar to sisqo_uk.
    CPU: 76C GPU 88C

I found them pretty hot too but the heat seems to come entirely from the gpu. When using orthos for half an hour I only reach 62 C for the CPU (without undervolting or any changes to the thermal paste). So jerry66 I would be more interested in your temperatures when the gpu and cpu are full working together. I don't think you will show off so nice then. At least not with FX770.

    @sisqo_uk
Which drivers did you exactly use to run it so cool? Did you make the FX770 be recognized as 9600m GT? Thanks.

everything running 100% with intense graphics the gpu hits 48 -50 , using ssandra pro it hit 62 once . I guess the nvidia GPU un much hotter . I f everyone is getting those temps it must be okay , well withindesign specs . Not to worry

hi, i am using drivers 180.48 and it does recognise it as 9600gt. i tired to add a attachment to show u. i cant say what kinda temps they stay at cos games seem to vary. i have tried unreal 3 with high settings and with undevolt they (GPU) went to as high as 77C but in rainbow 6 vegas 2 seem to hit 88C before i turned it off before i thought it would die lol(too close to 90c) i gotta experiment more with this game cos i was playin this before at 62-67c before.

tbh there are a few more frames than the quadro as i tested the this with GTA 4 and the frames difference were from 18 frames to 24 fps and resolution was 1368x768 with medium and high. ( cant remember what setting medium was called. rendering i think. if u have tied it you will no what i mean cos with this card u cant go past medium) but frames was good and very playable.

What drivers are the best for keeping temps down anyone? and anyone undervolt there 8530w and gamed with it? if so what kinda temps do u get with long periods of gaming. cos id rather lower temps with same performance.

Do you mean you undervolted the GPU?

It is unlikely your GPU will die before going over 105 C. My main concern is keeping the other parts of the notebook cool that are more vulnerable to heat.

Do you mean compared to quadro drivers (176.56), that makes sense because 180.48+ drivers are much better optimized for gta 4

When running a game for an hour or more my gpu is constantly 88C (no matter what driver). I log the temperature during the whole gaming session to be sure about that. If you use alt+tab or alt+esc and quickly look in HW monitor you can't get a good picture, because I noticed the temperature drops extremely fast to ~75 C when a game is paused. So far I haven't tried undervolting, but I tried downclocking to 430mhz core + 1075 mhz shaders (like a 9600m GS). It didn't help, the GPU always seems to operate at this temperature because the fan allows it.

Na i never undervolt my GPU. what i meant was after undervolting the temps that you see were the GPUs temp.

As for the drivers, Yes that was compared to the quadro 175.56 drivers. but then again. using the quadro drivers 180.48 instead of the 9600gt is not much difference. maybe 1 frame

I readjusted my settigns in RMCLOCK to the same as the guide and re-acheived the same kinda temps i had before when gaming which was now between 66-73C thats both rainbow and unreal 3 which before they was achieving 88c tops.
The way i look at is when you game, If you have already had high temps already recorded. close it then reapoen HWMONITOR before playing a game. that way u got fresh temps from what you just done so even when u check it and temps are falling u no what the highest temps achieved before they dropped.
