I am considering buying a 8530w with a intel x9100 and 7200rpm drive. What kind of battery life can expect from this with power save mode on doing web work or watching a blu-ray disc?

How much time do you get with your 8530w?

Also as an addendum how do you like the 1900x1200 screen?

Doing webwork perhaps with the CPU undervolted I'd say 3 - 3.5hrs (closer to 3). That CPU and 7200rpm hdd are battery drainers. As for blu-ray, even less. You can get extended batteries for the 8530 series which slots in under the notebook.

As for the 1920x1200 screen, I am a 8510p owner with that screen. :D These are CCFL (single) backlit WUXGA displays made by either Samsung or LG philips. Brightness tends to be on the low side (though they vary from each one, and mine is not bad at all). For work, I love the screen. :D If you are doign any half serious graphics work, don't bother with it. Go for the precision M4400 with the RGBLED backlit WUXGA panel.

My 8530w has a t9600 cpu. Battery life is quite good, around 3.5 hours on powersaver with wifi on and medium activity (browsing and office tasks).
The WUXGA on my machine is made by samsung and it is good in all areas except brightness. Max brightness is low so I am selling this machine for one with brighter led screen. (other than that it's a wonderful computer).

Mine is samsung too. :D Brightness is ok on mine, though I do have some light bleed on the bottom of the screen. No big deal (for me).

One thing I can't seem to find is how much the 12 cell addition sticks out. I know many brands it makes a gap under the notebook.

You think on blu-ray I would have enough juice to watch a whole movie (2.5 hours or so)?

It doesn't replace the standard 8 cell. Instead, it goes under the notebook (there is a dock and battery slot on the underside). It looks like this...

How much can I expect with the 12 cell slice?

That I have no idea I am afraid. The standard 8 cell is 73Whr, the 12 cell is 95Whr. Actual run time I am not too sure.

I can answer that question as I have one myself.
For my HP 8710w, battery run time is about 8.5 hours average. You will get approximately 10 to 11 hours with power saving mode.

So it appears that if I use the power profile of max battery on xp that I can achieve upwards of 4 hrs of battery life and with the normal laptop one I will find a battery life in the 3s. Playing blu ray discs results in a battery life of just under 2 hours.

this is with a x9100 processor.
