I hate to sound like a compete idiot here but what is the real diffrence here in regards to advantages of one over the other.

i can't seem to find any real information about the 9535nr, should I just consider it the same as the 9500t series?

The nr is just a tag HP adds to notebooks sold specifically through Bestbuy chain. You can come across other tags like wm(walmart) and others which are more general like us, ca, eu which ofcourse refers to the market in which the model is sold.

getting rid of Vista shouldnt be a problem as long as you can find drivers for XP. In any case burn a set of recovery disc before trying to install anything so ifXP doesnt workout you have the option to return the system to factory state.

Did this work? I just purchased a dv9535nr yesterday and am trying to figure out if the XP install guides for the 9500 series works for the 9535nr as well. Thanks.

    Yes, technically a dv9535 is a dv9500t.

Ok, before you go ahead and completely get rid of Vista think about this:
The bloatware from HP slows Vista down a hell of a lot. I just downloaded a Vista OS disk and reinstalled just the OS and drivers and I noticed a HUGE difference. Try getting your hands on a vista OS disk, reinstall, and give it a shot. Hell you can even make a dual boot. Everybody is complaining about Vista, but HP's bloatware slows vista down a ton!
