I called HP a few times and used their online chat before I bought my XPS and I was going to buy an HP. Each time they confirmed to me that the 9600m GT in the dv5t and dv7t had GDDR2. So there you have it :)

Not to confuse the situation but I ordered dv7t today and got a different answer in chat re:the 9600m GT. The agent did not know the answer and was gone for 8 minutes researching (duration taken from emailed transcript). This is the answer I received:

    08/01/2008 10:57:20AM Agent (Janice): "The 512MB GeForce 9600M GT option is a DDR3."

While not a deal breaker, I will definitely bring up the chat transcript that I have a copy of if it indeed ends up being DDR2.

That's crazy. Everything I've seen around here is that it is DDR2. I'm looking for something a little bit better than the 8600 DDR3 that was in the xps and after realizing that the cards were similar and maybe even a little worse I decided against the hp. If you have that entire transcript could you post it? I may contact hp later to see what they say.

First, based on the other responses, I'm pretty sure that it is indeed DDR2 not DDR3. It just makes me a bit irked at 'Janice' who obviously spent significant time getting me the wrong answer. Here is the entire conversation relating to the card (with my real name changed to my bbreviated name -> michaelj). I do have the entire 'chat session log' and could probably email it if needed. Assume you want to see the card related discussion in its entirety.

08/01/2008 10:49:14AM michaelj: "Question #2: On the 512MB GeForce 9600M GT option, is that DDR2 or DDR3 RAM?"
08/01/2008 10:49:43AM Agent (Janice): "Please give me a moment to check."
08/01/2008 10:49:43AM michaelj: "Looks like NVIDIA ships it with either option and I couldn't find the detail on the HP order page."
    08/01/2008 10:49:45AM michaelj: "Thx"
08/01/2008 10:50:04AM Agent (Janice): "Okay, please let me check on that. One moment please."
08/01/2008 10:52:53AM Agent (Janice): "Please give me another two minutes to research about your concern."
    08/01/2008 10:53:00AM michaelj: "ok dokey"
08/01/2008 10:56:36AM Agent (Janice): "Thank you for your patience."
    08/01/2008 10:57:20AM Agent (Janice): "The 512MB GeForce 9600M GT option is a DDR3."
    08/01/2008 10:57:29AM michaelj: "NICE!"

it is DDR2. All the current owner's 3dmark06 performance numbers prove it.

    DDR3 hits 5000 score on 3dmark06
    DDR2 hits 4000 score on 3dmark06.

All current owners are getting between ~4000ish
