I just wanted to post here that my problem was solved. I tried the reg edits posted in these forums, and none of that worked for me. I searched the registry and tried to find all the offending keys, or tried updating and reinstalling the listed display drivers, and still they all failed to solve my issue.

I was about to just revert to windows 7 but I did a hail mary and contacted hp's online chat. It must have installed some sort of remote access tool, because the tech I talked to asked me to restart my computer and the issue was solved. I have no idea what the issue was, or how it was fixed (the bad part), but if you are still having the issue, try contacting support. This time they were actually able to fix the issue.

Thanks a lot this information is very encouraging; I have had the same obnoxious problem. When I contacted support they did not have a fix for me though, would you mind giving me your chat session reference number so I can have them look it up to help me? Thanks!

I think its more like you had fixed it with a previous try and never rebooted. You probably shut down instead, which puts you in a hibernation state and does not update registry values (this is the default state for ANY Windows 8 install).

HP isn't going to risk a lawsuit by installing a remote access application on your machine to fix something. They are very much required to first gain your consent and then tell you when and how they are going to fix it.
