Google: "battery care" "plugged in" notebook
It'll give you plenty of information.
As a headstart, try this: http://h20239.www2.hp.com/techcenter/battery/Battery_max.htm

There are conflicting opinions on the matter of removing the battery when using AC power. I guess, and IMO and from what I read in the info from the above google result, unless your leaving the notebook plugged in the main for more than a week, it's safe to leave the battery in the notebook. If you remove the battery and use the main, be sure you're connecting to a UPS or your work and machine are doomed... :)

Check the Hardware forum for a recent thread on how to store your battery. There's no problem for the computer to operate without the battery, it is even beneficial for the life of the battery to store it apart from the laptop.

Just be careful that you don't disconect the AC when you don't have the battery pluged in. Otherwise you could lose all you data. :p

Just take a look any, yes, any display laptop in any store. You will hardly find one battery. They turn them on and let customers play at least 8 hrs a day.

Just matter of how you store your disconnected battery. I suggest discharge it before you store it.

Don't worry about your work, it would just like a desktop.
