I just have a few questions that I hope people with a compaq x1000 or someone who knows alot about them could answer because I think I am going to buy one. Feel free to answer all of them or just one.

1.I surf the internet, play Counterstrike, and do a tiny bit of photoshop, excel, powerpoint, etc. Is a 1.7 pentium M chip fast enough for me?

2.Is a 5400 rpm hard drive worth spending more money over a 4200 rpm one?

3.Is there a place to hook in speakers? I couldn't find anything except for the headphone jack in the front.

4.How long ago did the x1000 come out? I guess what I'm really asking is if its going to be replaced with a newer model anytime soon.

5.Does anyone know if HP/Compaq has a history of running any special "before school" specials that I should wait for and if so what they might be or have been in the past?

6.How fast are the DVD writers they install in them?

7.I know with dell that you can barter with them over the phone and get them to throw in extra stuff at no cost. Anyone done that with HP/Compaq?

    Thanks

    Carr,

    1. Pentium M 1.7 should be fast enough for everything you listed, CS might not be able to be played at max quality, med-high setting

    2. Definitely get the 5400rpm HDD, I saw a big improvement when I went from 4200 to 5400. Apps/games will load faster.

    3. No, the headphone jack is the only place you can hookup external speakers

    4. It came out early to mid 2003

    5. Yes, HP has been known to come out with specials, the best thing to do is to check the Notebook & Tech Bargains forum found here for any deals.

    6. The DVD burner I believe is a 2.4X "plus" media only drive. Therefore using any "minus" media will not work.

    7. I've never tried bartering with HP on the phone, but anything is possible.

The processor is not the issue for CS, the issue is graphics card, I can play it with a 700mhz celeron with no problems as long as I have a descent video card.

My personal opinion for the 5400, I believe in a laptop it is a waste of money. The only thing it does is make it slightly faster run time. The rest of the time you wont notice it. It will run the same regardless of your drive.
