I brought an HP dv9000 notebook with the $500 off coupon. This is my first hp computer. I have a few
questions: It came with duo core 2 2.2gigs, 2 7200rpm
HDs, nvidia8600, fingerprint, vista home, 2 gig ram, etc.
)My dv9000 came with 3 discs. 2 discs set titled recovery and 1 disc titled drivers and applications. If I want to do a clean reinstall(reformat/reinstall vista home), do I insert the first of the 2 recovery disc set? also, the drivers and applications disc contain some files but no exe programs. How do I load ms works/etc from it?
2)How do I run the windows update feature?
3)Is it possible to install vista home on each of the two hard drives?
4)The vista home activation keys label is on the back of the notebook but there is no activation keys for MS works that came installed?
5)how does HP warrenty work? do I send it in for repair or does hp send a techie out to do the repair?
After reading some of the horror stories about the dv9000, after I got mine, I am thinking of sending it back. I got free shipping. How much $ would I lose by sending it back?
Thanks.

My guess would be the recovery discs put your machine back they way it was when you got it. For a clean install you'll need the Anytime Upgrade disc.
It's usually on the start menu though can be found in the Security Center as well.
Just curious, why would you want two installs of the same OS?
I would suggest OpenOffice. It's compatible with Office, is free and works quite well.
Unless you paid for on-site you will have to mail your notebook in.
Depends where you bought it. -
1) You cant do a clean install with the recovery disks. Your gonna need to get a hold of ANY sort of vista install disc. See the stickied "Clean installation guide" by Orev for more info
2) Trust me you wont miss windows update. Lots of places to access it from. It even bugs you to update!
3) Not sure why you would wanna install 2 copies of the same OS
4) The activation key you see at the back is from Vista not msworks. Msworks can be activated online i believe. I didnt re-install it after i did the clean install i believe its sitting in the MSworks folder or something like that in my drivers disc
5) Depends what needs to be repaired. Most of the time it will need to be sent in by a box they give you. If its minor like keyboard problems, they will just send you the part with instructions and do it yourself.
You wouldnt really loose much if you send it back. Try it out before the return period expires. If you dont like it or somethings wrong then send it back -
Thanks for your replies, folks.
If I reinstall MSworks do I need to activate it online with MS? Also, how do I reinstall the drivers from the "drivers and applications" disc? I inserted it in my dvd drive and it had all sorts of files but none had an .exe extension. How do I use the recovery discs that I made?
I want to install two vista home on the HDs, one for gaming and one for regular use. My dv9000 came with 3 discs, 2 are Recovery discs and 1 is applications/drivers. Shouldn't I be able to do a clean install of vista home from the recovery discs(not the ones I burned from the loaded vista home OS)?

I think you dont have too re-activate it, its only a few mouse click to do so anyway. The drivers folder should have some sort of .exe file or close. If it doesnt then you will have to do it by device manager and look for the .inf files. Post a screenshot of whats in the driver folders

Why dont you just make 2 user profiles on Vista instead of making 2 separate OS's?
No you cant do a clean install using recovery disks. Recovery disks will return your computer exactly the way you got it (with the bloatware of course). Read the guide we linked.
