I've been looking for a well-built, high-end desk top replacement with excellent graphics capabilities, and finally settled on the HP/Compaq nw9440, which eventually arrived today. (It took over a month from a reseller, though HP also had it on back order when I had called them).

The model (RB552UA#ABA) has a 2.16GHz (T7400) Core 2 Duo Intel CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 100GB 7200rpm, and 17" a WUXGA display with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500 M (256 MB). It's not often that a preconfigured model fits what I'm looking for, but this one did, and it was nice to order one thing and get exactly what I wanted in one box.

My first impressions are really positive (as I'd hope they would be). It seems really solidly built, good feeling keyboard (maybe not quite as good as a thinkpad, but still very good), no dead pixels at all that I can see, and, considering it does have a 17" screen, really amazingly slim and light (I think it's suppposed to be around 7.5lbs) for something this powerful.

I ran a couple of quick benchmarks out of the box, only having updated windows and gone through a little Norton anti-virus hell (guess I will use it for the free 60 day update period...)

Super Pi (2 million digits): 58 secs

    .

Curious... How much, and who did you end up getting it from?

BTW NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500 M (256 MB) = NVIDIA 7900GS 256mb ... which means you should be able to run just about anything with no slow downs.

PS: While you're within your return window, be sure to run burn-in apps (stress testing programs) to give the machine a good workout...

It was $3,159 through the CA state contract, quite a bit less than the standard business price, plus about $130 for the 3-year service contract. They put it out to bid and the reseller shaved off a few dollars, but the price was basically the same as the one on the HP website.

Yup, I know. :) And it should run just about anything except Gothic 3, anyway, which doesn't seem to run smoothly on anything.

I'm sure the Quadro FX 1500 is more expensive than the 7900GS but I'm not convinced that its graphics performance will be any less even for non-CAD "applications". Guess I'll find out though. I also think the 7900GS is a nice spot for performance/power consumption.

    Any specific recommendations?
