First off let me say Hello and Thanks to orev for his EXELLENT Vista clean install guide, it worked perfect.
In the past I have always owned Toshiba laptops (good laptops in my opinion), but I recently bought my 1st HP laptop (DV9410us). I grabbed it at Office Depot for $699.99 and so far I really like it, but like all laptops it comes with too much BloatWare. As I was researching my new treasure I ran across this forum and orev's Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION guide.
After I got my restore disks created and tested, my SwSetup folder backed up and my Clean install completed and Activated it was time to get my DRIVERS and Programs loaded.
BUT how do I make heads and tails of what I do and do not need from the SwSetup folder. Some of the things in the folder are not really clear on exactly what they are. So my first goal was to get just the BASIC drivers loaded so when I looked at my Device Manager there were no problems. So between HP's website and the SwSetup folder I acomplished this with no problem.
I dont really need any of the software that comes with the laptop as I have my own programs such as OpenOffice, Nero, WinZip etc... BUT! altho my laptop seems to run fine so far with the basics there are still things in the SwSetup folder that I'm not quite sure if I need or not. I'm sure that most of the newer HP laptops come with pretty much the same stuff so I made a list of whats in the SwSetup folder and have identified what I could be 100% sure of, I am listing it here in hopes that others might edit (add too) the list so all of us will know what everything in the folder is. I hope that this list will help others and I hope others will be able to identify what I couldnt.
I have marked what I feel is NEEDED and NOT NEEDED for a BASIC install to get the laptop up and running smoothly, feel free to correct me if my information is incorrect.

thats an excellent question. i ran into some confusion myself when i did a clean install of vista following the guide. it could use a list like you've compiled of the folders. TVTnr is for the optional tv tuner. MMFlash is for the memory card reader. Two things you should consider: Drivers/software on HP's website may be newer than the one in your SWsetup folder. you can finder newer video drivers at http://www.tweakforce.com/
also if you just start the setup file for the driver/software then clicking cancel instead of next to continue the installation you can see what it is. -
I was going to start a list like this, but when they have updates, the folders change. Also, I haven't had the same free time to devote to it, as I'm now using my laptop and not playing with it anymore. Anyway, you can get very good clues to what everything is by looking in the .CVA files in each folder. They are text files, so you can view them in notepad.

Thanks for the quick replies, I have edited the List, I'll edit as I find out what each item actually is.
I'm still in the play mode since I've only had this laptop for a week, Plus I'm retired from the military and have alot of time on my hands at the moment. -
Thanks for putting this together! Will be useful once I reimage once I get the laptop
.
Also, are there any 'critical' ones that need to be installed absolutely before anything else?! Or can we go in any random manner?! -
hey can someone tell me what MSCUVT is for in the HP's sw_setup folder..?? in the above u have not mentioned whether or not a person would requier it after a clean install...!! can anyone explain?

The easiest why of clean install is to download the latest drivers from HP and set that aside on a disc and when you install Vista you can use these drivers, one by one. Vista recognizes new drivers automatically but just in case download the recent drivers from HP.

Thanks for this. Gonna finally do the clean install after like a month of looking for vista. I finally got a hold off a Windows Anytime DVD off ebay. Had to pay $15 for it though since its unavailable here in Aust... worth it i guess.
I gotta add to the folder list: BTooth = Bluetooth drivers . Also i saw mine has WLAN and WLAN2 folders, not sure why theres 2 ill find out later -
Quoting my self at post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=175220
"ESU and MSCU are windows vista .msi patches in a exe package. HP install the packages but doesn't install the patches (msi) automatically , so you must go to the Program Files and under ESU and MSCU install them manually. Quite stupid from HP. Some msi will tell you they are not for your machine, you can ignore them.
You can copy the msi from Program files to another place to keep them for future use, and uninstall the ESU and MSCU, that takes quite a lot hard disk space (close to 100 mb). And install the msi from where you keep them one by one, just don't reboot the computer until you finish installing all ( ignore prompts to reboot now)"
Inside this exe are x86 and 64 bit msi patches. -
Is it nesscessary to instal the ESU and MSCU folders? Doesnt Windows Update do those patches for you?
-
Quoting myself again:
"Uhmm, no exactly. Some of them you have to look for them at Microsoft site, because are related to specific problems, so you normally don't get them through Microsoft update.
Several are specific to laptops only, so there's little insterest for desktop users. That's why you don't get them throught windows update." -
Nevermind i just checked my SW folder and neither ESU or MSCU were there
More folders to add on the list for DV2500:
WLAN = Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter Driver (wireless lan)
WLAN2 = Intel PRO/Wireless drivers for the Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection and Adapters (wired lan)
SP35384 = Lightscribe Host program, enables lightscribe. (Its best if you download this from the actual lightscribe website as its the latest.)
MISC5 = For me this was the webcam drivers. Its best you replace this driver with Acer Crysal Eye drivers if you have a Chicony webcam -
nevermind
