I am hoping to get a dv5000 series notebook for work. Our vendor is recommending a different HP model with an Intel P4 listed as a "business" notebook (can't remember the model at the moment).

I will be doing CAD work, MS Office applications, maybe some video editing, electronics design and processor intensive circuit simulations. No games necessarily.

I like the AMD processors and like the upgradeability to 64 bit applications in the future.

Maybe I just had my heart set on the AMD and am not thinking clearly.

My question is why would a P4 be better than an AMD 64?

Currently using eMachines 5305 laptop / space heater.
Will be getting HP dv5000 (AMD 64) 2.8 GHz w/1 gig mem, 15.4" brightview screen, vid mem 64 mB, win XP Pro

Intel might be better from your vendor's monetary perspective, but I don't see any advantages for you. All the tasks you listed scream "Buy AMD64!". You'll get better performance now and receive an additional boost when 64-bit WinXP ships (CAD, video editing, and EDA are major 64-bit targets, Unix-based EDA tools are already there).

Ask your vendor what Intel has to compensate for the lack of hardware-assisted buffer overflow prevention (the NX bit, aka Enhanced Virus Protection), the lack of 64-bit support, and the MUCH higher rate of power consumption. I'm amazed that AMD hasn't taken over corporate desktops with the NX bit feature alone.

Get the zv5000z with Athlon 64 3700+ and consider a higher-res screen rather than the 1280x800 res BrightView (depends on how good your eyes are). You can justify the top-of-the-line CPU. Get Bluetooth and the 12-cell battery too (I really like my Microsoft Bluetooth wireless mouse).

    Good answer.

I think also our vendor doesn't consider a laptop a "business" PC unless it comes in a plain black box. For a computer I will be using 10+ hours a day it's not too muych to ask for it to look decent.

Also, I’ve been hearing mixed reviews on HP quality and am not sure what to think now.

Thanks for the reply [ :)]

Same one you have in your Sig configured to order. I left off the "z" by mistake I think.

After configuring the HP model it actualy came out a little more expensive with similar options to above. Plus I wont have to spend my time cleaning off free AOL trials and HP advertisements.

If anyone is interested maybe I'll review it once I've had a chance to break it in. Looks like a good deal for the features. I have read many mixed reviewew about the company and the computer but mostly good.

Well, I did a personal (non-HP) upgrade to a Hitachi 7K60, and loaded it from the disks, so I didn't have much of problem keeping AOHell stuff off.

I have had absolutely no problems, and the performance is great. But for CAD and video editing, I'd skip the brightview and the low-res 1280x800 and get the sharp and bright non-Briteview 1920x1200. And I have old, old eyes.
