I am waiting for my ENVY SB 17 3D configured with 2 - 750GB 5400 RPM hard drives (with 8GB ram & 2.0 processor). For anyone that had received this configuration already 2 questions arise:

    1. Are they shipping RAID0 Striped?

    2. Are they fast enough?...abstract question i know... I do a little gaming, some Excel, Word, Outlook work simultaneously, a little photo editing, etc. I am trying to decide whether to mess with replacing the hard drives or just using them the way they ship.

Thanks in advance...great forum with solid input.

They will be fine for your needs. You could always replace one with an ssd.

If you are referring to a system with TWO hard drives (2 x 750=1.5 TB) or (2 x 1TB=2TB)...RAID 0

All depends on who you're asking. After getting an SSD, old hard drives are no comparison.

I hear you and am looking forward to one but I have been buying PC's since 1989 and know the will be big, cheap and have the glitches worked out soon enough. I don't want to spend 400 or 500 now (I don't want a small one) for what will cost 100 in a year or 2. Just spending preference. I definitely think its ridiculous we don't have a twin 7200 option and was not even going to buy an envy yet until my 30% off was achieved. I have an 18 month old HDX. Thanks for ypour input though.

I received my ENNY and am loading it up with a computer guru buddy. It is hard for me to tell if the twin 5400's are "fast enough" but my buddy says they are suprisingly snappy. Iasked a HP tech (India) why they went with twin 5400's instead of 7200's and he replied for data integrity...thats a new answer. I really hate to go breaking into a brand new laprop and am still irritated they did not offer twin 7200's but at the current moment plan to live with them.

Yes...just as the knowledgable members on this forum described to me, the twin 5400's are Raid0 and striped shipped from HP. So my 2 x 750 set up "shows" up as one big 1.5TB hard drive. I don't know how 2 - 5400's raided and striped compare to a 7200 for speed. They seem ok for now...

Hell I don't know...they seem to be OK. I haven't edited video or anything yet but gamed COD a bit and they seem to be fine. I don't think I'm going to mess with the shipped system for now and am loadin' it up.
