I just got my brand new HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition.

And I am trying to Bitstream True HD and DTS HD MA with the ATI Radeon 5650. I have tried everything and can not get this laptop to Bitstream.

However I just found out that my laptop came installed with ATI Catalyst 10.1 and there is a bug in this driver that was fixed in ATI Catalyst 10.4.

So I need to install ATI Catalyst 10.4 or later to get Bitstream True HD and DTS HD MA to work!

But I tried installing ATI Catalyst 10.6 from ATI web site and it will not work with my video card in this HP laptop :(

This is why laptops suck you have to use the out dated drivers from HP web site :(

Are all companies that make laptops this way?

With my custom desktop computer I can just go to each of the hardware sites and download the latest updated drivers.

Is there anyway around this issue?

I'm interested in this problem. I would buy a 5650 laptop unless there is a problem with using the drivers from ati.

Does HP use custom laptop drivers?

Why can't ATI get on board like nVidia?

    Drivers Gráficos e Softwares

the most probable thing is that you downloaded the desktop drivers, ati driver support now is actually better than nvidia in terms of notebook

and put the mobility line, some idiot in the ati site thinks that the mobility is different from notebooks go figure

I downloaded it from here Graphics Drivers & Software

And selected "Notebook Graphics" then "mobility Radeon Series" and then I selected for the 5000 series.

I am sure that it was the mobility Radeon Series driver that I indeed downloaded!

I am stuck with ATI Catalyst 10.1 :(

Why is HP 6 Months behind in there Video driver updates?

It looks like that HP created a custom combo driver that contains both the Intel HD and ATI drivers. Perhaps installing the ATI drivers separately breaks the machine's recognition of switchable graphics.

That is what I think the problem is because 10.6 installed fine for me.

    The acer instructions are:

Install Acer ATI VGA drivers (so intel + ati)

    restart.

    go to bios.

disable switchable (turn it onto discrete only in the bios. This will be the big issue if we can't do that in the hp bios)

Go back to windows and install the new catalyst drivers.

Restart. Go turn the switchable option back on.

There is no option for graphics switching in my BIOS, don't know about the dv6t though.

yeah. The only other option I could think of is modifying the ati-intel dual install thing by somehow replacing the catalyst stuff that's currently in it with the catalyst 10.6 drivers and trying to install it that way

...problem is I dunno how you'd do that.

It should work fine. ajn89 has basically the same config and he updated to 10.6. Just download and install.
