I have a HP dv6 and i installed XP on dual boot with win7. My laptop has switchable graphics, but I cannot get XP to detect the ATI 5650 GPU and it runs only on the intel GPU by default. When i tried to install catalyst drivers, downloaded from both AMD as well as HP's site(for XP), the catalyst installation manager does not even give me the option of installing the actual drivers(the option of around 90 MB in size) in the components selection screen.
it only gives me options of installation manager, lord of the rings trial and one more small thing, which is surely not the actual driver. I think this means that the ATI GPU is not detected at all. I tried switching GPU in Win 7 to ATI and then rebooting into XP, but no use.
    Model no: DV6-3141se.
No unknown or strange device in device manager too.Can somebody please help me to get XP to detect the ATI GPU?

are the ati drivers specific to win7 with no XP drivers available?

if so, that is your problem

i downloaded xp drivers from ATI's website. Tried all versions from 10.11 to 11.3.
So availability of drivers is not an issue.

Right now, there is no actual driver that is specifically compatible with the HP/ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 graphics card.

No guarantees if this will work, but download this CAB package from Microsoft Update - http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._2d3030cd0079f209562a4f6d82225a8db0b4e8d6.cab

Driver date: 01/13/2010, Driver version: 8.672.1.2000

Extract this and install via INF file through the Device Manager - Update driver wizard.

You can also try modding the setup INF in current AMD/ATI packages for Windows XP to make the card compatible.

Thank you for the response. But how can i use update driver in device manager when i cannot see the device at all in device manager? There is no unknown device in device manager too. And about the unavailability of driver for 5650, i tried the ATI XP driver from HP's site which was meant for a model with 5650(switchable), so shouldn't that driver be meant for 5650?

The package you downloaded from HP may have support for the ATI Mobility Radeon 5650, but is it a version of the 5650 with a matching hardware / subsystem ID? The AMD/ATI graphics packages from HP will only install if it is specifically meant for your notebook model - otherwise, you're out of luck.

Also, if there are no unknown devices - then I'm not sure if switchable graphics is currently supported in Windows XP with your current configuration. Meaning, if the Intel HD Graphics is enabled by default, then it may very well be difficult to detect and enable the ATI graphics card at all.

I tried the xp driver of HP dv6-3040ee, which has i5-430m, 4GB DDR3 RAM, ATI 5650. I thought that since the hardware is similar, the driver might work. I guess i am not in luck, and it will not work(but why do they provide the XP drivers if they don't work anyway?)
