This morning is started up my hp envy 14 and switched to the high-performance GPU (AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700 Series) to end up with a black screen.

After booting back into the intel gpu I went into device manager and could not find the ATI display adapter anymore. Just the intel one.

Does this mean my ATI GPU is physically broken or could there be something else to get my ATI GPU back? Should I open up my device to see if the connectors are in the right place?

I tried installing the latest 11.6 drivers but that doesn't help.

When one is working the other is not, so you will not see it available. Reinstall drivers for GPU. There is a thread with newest drivers.

Hi Szadzik, thanks for taking the time to reply. I did try to install the latest drivers as shown in this thread to no avail. How can I see if the drivers are correctly installed if the GPU doesn't show up in Device Manager?

Download the stock drivers from that thread. When installing choose the uninstall option and see if there's any ati programs that it detects. If there is uninstall them. Then reinstall the stock driver.
