okay, before I explain, about 6 months ago I owned a DV6000T, and I did a clean install of Vista.

Well, I realized, whenever Vista would boot and the desktop would load, my wireless would always have a red x on it, and the system sort of hung there for a few seconds (this is not the flash screen fix posted earlier, but that had also added to the problem before the fix came out (Thanks dude!).

Anyways, this all started to happen after I installed all of my drivers because when I first installed Vista, this was not happening. So I individually installed each single driver and found the problem to be the Conextant drivers. BOTH the Sound and the Modem drivers.

Once I uninstalled the two from Control Panel (Programs and Features), and voila, my boot up of Vista was perfect again, no more red x, everything was ready right when the desktop loaded.

There are honestly NO side effects to not having those Conextant drivers. If I had to pick one, it's the Mute button on the keyboard doesn't change colors, big freakin' deal. Although it was affecting my startup from all I could tell, who knows what else those Conextant drivers were screwing up.

My sound and audio still rocks with the native Vista drivers, and I'm still able to apply those Enhancements like Bass Booster, Loudness equalization, and Virtual Surround.

So anyways, I figured I'd post this up on here for you guys again who were aware of this problem but just couldn't but your damn fingers on it (I made a thread on this a while back, so I'm bringing it back to life).

Anyways, hope this helps someone, thoughts or comments are welcomed.

P.S. Try it out! You have nothing to lose, if you have the symptom I'm talking about, it's worth your time, if you change your mind, you could always reinstall your Conextant drivers.)

AH. u found the solution to my problem. i thought it was HP wireless asst that was the cause of the problem but i guess this might be the real cause. haha. anyways, i can only find Conexant HD audio in e Programs and Features. so does that mean the Conexant modem and sound drivers aren't installed in my comp?

okay i found the drivers but even after uninstalling them the red x still stays there. oh and flamenko, ur vista tweak guide is GOOD. i love the 1st tweak cos it was very annoying when the screen would flicker everytime i turned on the comp. as for ur 2nd tweak, i dont think ill use it for now cos my boot time is about 45 secs and i am happy with it. thanks tho! great guide.

No no, this is different. #2 in your article doesn't fix this problem. This was being caused for sure by the Conextant drivers, your tweak guide was great though, thanks so much.

Cotton_mouth, I know this works on a fresh install, because all of that junk HP puts isn't on there to slow down the system, especially start up. So I'm not sure what your current set up is

The proper way to uninstall the Conextant drivers is to find Conextent High Def Audio I think it was, then for the Modem it would be osmething liek "HD Modem etc etc" If you look you'll find the Modem drivers too, they just won't have Conextant in the front.

my computer is dv2500 series and vista was pre-installed on it. yeah i found those drivers and i am sure they are the same drivers as yours cos the same happens to me..like after deleting the drivers, i can still mute from the keyboard but e light stays blue. so i did delete the right drivers for modem and audio..but the red x is still there.

just for ur info, the red x onl goes away after the screen flickers (which i found out from the vista tweak guide was that it was looking for the external monitors). now i have tweaked my com and the screen doesnt flicker anymore but the red x is still there and it just goes away by itself later...
