my dad just bought one and now he wants bluetooth, is it possible to get it internally?
thanks

Yes, but it takes some skills.
You'll need to find the card HP uses in their notebooks (I think they use the same in all models, however I may be wrong) and find a service manual from HP to figure out how to open the notebook, where the Bluetooth card goes, and then hook it up.
However, all of this can be complicated, and will definitely void your warranty. -
It isn't that complicated, and it shouldn't void the warranty. Go to partsurfer.hp.com and look up your notebook and the miniPCI BT card that you'll need.
After you get the card, you should be able to locate the miniPCI slot and open it by removing one screw. Plug in, close lid, insert screw, and you should be good to go.
However, find the service manual for your notebook before doing this, just to make sure you know what you are doing and are not afraid to do it. -
I went to the partsurfer.hp.com and I found the part number, but it says I can't order it. part #397923-001 Embedded Blueflame (Broadcom) circuit board - Includes board cable. it also says it's $38... any other way to getting it?!?
-
USB2.0 to BT Adapter..but that costs $40.
The only dirty thing here is that sometimes HP BIOS will reject internal PC parts that didn't come from HP. If you find a comparable miniPCI card from someone else, I'd give both the retailer and HP and confirm the device should work. Make sure the retailer has a return policy just in case the card doesn't work. I'm not trying to scare you, but I have heard stories about sticking non-HP parts into HP laptops so just make sure you are covered.
I'd give HP a call and see what the story is with that out of stock part. -
*shrugs*
Anyways, it really depends all on if a person wants to keep the warranty.
Back to the topic...
Kryptonite1055, try search on eBay. They could have the Bluetooth part you need. Just make sure it'll work with the notebook.
Or Google "HP Parts" and search past the results if gives to HP's parts site. -
I want to do exactly the same thing. I already have a USB2 Bluetooth 2.0 EDR dongle, but I don't want anything hanging in the outside of my laptop.
Yes, the original module for dv2120us is HP PN 397923-001 , however it doesn't appear for sale in HP's or other online stores.
Service manual for HP dv2120us can be downloaded at:
http://pood.elion.ee/download.aspx/11490
I've found an ebay seller that have the equivalent bluetooth module for other HP laptops. The broadcomm bluetooth 2.0 chip is BCM92045NMD, they have it for the HP NX7400 (PN 397922-001), however I can't figure out if it's the same form factor or if it uses the same connection cable.
I'm thinking of buying one of those modules to try if it fits.
These are the parts list of the HP Bluetooth 2.0 modules:
397923-001 BT Module for HP dv2120us
397922-001
HP/Compaq dv5000 Bluetooth 2.0 Board BCM92045NMD
HP/Compaq NX7400 Bluetooth 1.2 BCM92035NMD Board
HP/Compaq NC6000 NC8000 Bluetooth 2.0 Board BCM92045NMD
379191-001
BT 2.0+EDR BCM92045NMD HP/Compaq NC6000, NC8000, NC4000, NC4010 TC1100 and Z, T, X, NW
This is one of those modules: (the even have links to online service manuals)

It doesn't void the warranty if the OEM (in this case HP) deems the upgrade to be easy enough for the user to do it without risking damage to the laptop.
Things that can be upgraded and preserve the warranty:
HDD (if the slot is accessible from the outside)
RAM (if the slot is accessible from the outside)
BT (if the slot is accessible from the outside)
WiFi (if the slot is accessible from the outside)
Optical Drive (if you can remove it without taking apart the notebook)
Keyboard (if HP provides the new part)
Things that are not:
CPU (too complicated to tear notebook apart and still have to replace thermal protection)
GPU (you can't do this anyway in most notebooks)
LCD (too many wires near the motherboard and too difficult)
CPU/GPU fan (too much potential to assemble it wrong and then it will not work)
You get the basic idea. As long as it is "child's play" you can do it. -
rubae2000... I have been looking that up, and I think the shape is different and will not work for the dv2000 series. This bluetooth module is found in the dv2000, v3000, v4000, dv4200, and dv4400
-
I think I found one online ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-pavillion-DV...QQihZ013QQcategoryZ116331QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
it says it is from a dv4000 series, and the part # that he gives does not exist on the hp website but at hp part surfer the dv4200, and the dv4400 used the same bluetooth module. If I can confirm that it works for the dv2000, I am getting it. This has been the only one that looks like it works.
If you know that it works for the dv2000 please respond asap so I can get this
thanks -
rubae2000... I was wrong... that does look like it is the right card, but that one didn't have the wire included. So i need to find that card with a wire and I am set to go... thanks
-
..
Just a thought, wonder what lenght that wire is... if it's "special", or just a wire of a certain length... (tuned to a certain rf)
Another thought, on some models the wire is already there..
-
actually the wire that is needed is not an antenna wire but a wire that hooks up to the rest of the comp
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ategory=177&ssPageName=STORE:PROMOBOX:NEWLIST
If you have an HP laptop this is the bluetooth card. if you scroll down you will see the wire you need. they charge GBP 4.99, and the card itself is GPB 29.99
exchage rate from GBP to $ is 1.96 to 1 GBP so almost double the price for everything -
Never mind me, then.
-
Krypto:
That one you've found in ebay may fit, however, the chipset model (BCM92035NMD) looks like it's Bluetooth v1.2. I'd like to know if it will work with A2DP (stereo bluetooth).
Hey, how did you discover that the 397922-001 it's the same form-factor as the 397923-001? Did you find clearer pictures to figure that out? I couldn't find any
Update:
I googled "364383-002" and didn't find anything, that looks suspicious to me. Maybe a wrong Part Number? (Googling "397923-001" throws some results) -
ok so BCM92045NMD is the part number broadcom uses for the card (bluetooth 2.0), but the main difference between the HP part numbers 397922-001 and (397923-001 used in dv2000, v3000, and some other models) they have a different wire that connects to the system board.
!!!!I am guessing the length!!!!
But looking at the price difference between the 397922-001 ($78 and in stock) and the 397923-001 ($38) I might be wrong. Their must be some other difference I don't know
The reason why HP does not have it online is b/c they are sold out. I have been on the phone for 50 min just to find that out. I wish they just told me that in the first place -
wow! kripto. You're trying really hard! Thanks for all the information. Do you think they will have those in stock soon? I'd prefer to buy the right PN instead of trying to fig some other card model.
-
i have no clue on that... The only way that I know is to bookmark the web page for the part (that is what I did), and check it. I didn't ask if that is what you are wondering
http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bi...de=&partsrch=397923-001&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
there is the web page... I think I put it before... some where -
Parts for adding bluetooth to DV2120 are now online in hp parts store:
http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/
397923-001 Embedded Blueflame (Broadcom) circuit board - Includes board cable $38.00
Description says it comes with the required cable. Nice!
If cable kit is required, this is the part #:
417075-001 Cable kit - Includes USB interface cable, Bluetooth cable, and others miscellaneous cables $63.00
Manual for disassembly can be downloaded from a link in a previous post in this same thread.
Any volunteer to try this ? -
Since I have been following this thread, I thought I would join and post my experience...
First, you can indeed add the 397923-001 Internal Bluetooth component to your DV2000. I did just a few hours ago. Now the bad news. When I ordered the part last week, the description indicated that the interface cable was included. The first part I received did not come with the cable. I called HP and they sent another one. This, too, did not include the cable. On Thursday, 2/15, I noticed that the description now says "does not include interface cable." So, because I am a glutton for punishment, I ordered the cable kit, which does include the correct cable but costs $63.
So, more than $100 later, I have internal bluetooth. It is nice to get rid of the external dongle I was using, but I would say it is not worth it. I'm not afraid of opening a computer, but the install was way more involved than I would have liked.
If anyone does do this, there are a couple of mistakes in the Maintenance and Service Guide. On page 5-45, there are only 3 PM2x4 screws, not 4, and on page 5-26, there are 2 PM2.5x5 screws, not 1, and they are black, not silver. I also did not have to remove the display to as described in section 5.12. My guide was dated June 2006 - maybe there is an update. Also, you will need a way to attach the module since it does not come with the PM2x3 screws. I glued mine because I could not locate these small screws anywhere.
Let me know if I can answer any questions. -
Thanks, NcNj ... You've answered several already... I was worried about the same cable issue, since the item description changes from "includes cable..." to "does not include..." apparently depending from where you find the part in the online store.
Two more questions:
-Which bluetooth stack (software) are you using? The MS which comes with winXP? There are bluesoleil and widcomm too.
-Which version of bluetooth is the module? v1.1, v1.2 or v2.0 ? You can check that in the hardware tab, in advanced configuration of the bluetooth software, at least in Widcomm's. ( HCI, LMP Version #'s )
Thanks! -
Rubae,
I am using the Widcomm stack. I assume it was part of the SP32315A softpaq that I downloaded from the HP site. The version is 4.0.1.3301. It is a lot better than the Toshiba stack I was using with the dongle.
HCI Version: Bluetooth HCI 2.0
HCI Revision: 204A
LMP Version: Bluetooth LMP 2.0
LMP Sub Version 4127
The range is at least as good as the 2.0 dongle - I am able to synch with a phone at least 15 or 20 feet away.
Maybe you can find a cheaper cable from the link on eBay. I should have measured the cable before I put it in, but I would say it is between 4.5 and 5.5 inches. Good luck -
The top cover is stuck on there. I've got the screws removed... are there tabs or do I just need to pull?
