I have my hands on a comapq presario V2000 and I would like to put in some extra ram. It currently has 256mb and I have a 512mb suitable for it. I heard it's just a matter of popping the door open and putting it into the second bay. Do I have to do anything first? I have never added ram to a notebook before. I read somewhere that I should swap them having the 256 below and 512 on top... or vicea versa. Is this true? If there is are a "DIY" guide with pictures out there, that would be fantastic, or any help in general. Thanks!

Just make sure you shut down the computer, unplug form the power source and remove the battery and make sure you dont have any static electricity build up in your body. No other swap of the memory chips is required. That might be for very specific systems which have more than 2 memory slots or if you notice problems after you install the memory. Next, probably the most important step is to test the memory with a utility like Memtest86+ which you can burn to a disc and boot from startup, this will show errors(if any) with the memory. In case it does then you can try swapping the modules or testing the modules each at a time.
HP has service guides online which should describe the process in more detail...

Avoid static electricity. Make sure the RAM is the same spec as the other one. It's recommended to place the larger RAM closer to the CPU. Hopefully one slot is open. Sometimes both will be filled with two 128mb memory. Make sure you have the correct screwdriver to open the door also, not the high tapered end philips because it won't "catch" the sides of the screw and probably shear it instead.

This is more of a question on this same thread. I have a Compaq Evo notebook. I have got 2x1gb ram chips ddr sidimm, 266 mhz to replace the old 256mb, ddr 133 mhz ram. When i plug either of these new rams into either of the slots computer fires up just fine. If i use both of the ram chips it wont boot.
Starts to power up but then stops. Remove one ram chip from either slots and it will start ok, just does not like 2 cards.
I could not see anything on the bios that suggests anything.
Any suggestions please? -
Try updating the BIOS if there's a newer one. Go to HP's website, click on "Software & Driver Downloads" and enter your Evo's model number.
