So I have a 250gb 5400rpm in my laptop and I was going to add a second drive that I wanted to be 7200rpm and needed some info from HP.

This is what they told me...

    Shaun: Hello Phifer8390.
Shaun: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebook. My name is Shaun. How may I assist you today?
Phifer8390: Interisted in installing a secondary hard drive but need to know if it is a sata or serial ata
Shaun: I will be glad to assist you in this regard.
Shaun: Could I have the Serial (eg: CNS34915MC), Product (eg :DS542U) , Model Number (eg :pavilion zt3000) and the Operating System installed (eg: Windows XP or Vista) of the Notebook?
Phifer8390: Serial: xxxxxxxxxxx Model: dv9700t OS: vista home prem p/n: xxxxxx
Shaun: Thank you for the information.
Shaun: Let me check specifications of your notebook and provide you the exact specifications of hard drive which suits your notebook.
Shaun: Could I have 3-5 minutes of your time while I search the information for you? That should help me assist you better.
    Phifer8390: not a problem
    Shaun: Thank you.
Phifer8390: could you e-mail me these specs you are looking up?
Shaun: Sure I will email you.
Shaun: Thank you for your patience and time.
    Phifer8390: no problem
Shaun: Your notebook is shipped with one of the two following sata drives.
Shaun: 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive.
    Phifer8390: ok thank you
Shaun: Could you let me know exact hard drive installed in your noteboi.
    Shaun: *Notebook.
    Phifer8390: 250gb 5400rpm
Shaun: You need to buy exact same 250gb with 5400rpms for the second hard drive.
Shaun: Here is the exact part details.
    Shaun: 453827-001
    Shaun: 453827-001
Phifer8390: why is that? i was going to get a 7200rpm
Shaun: 250GB SATA 1.5Gb/s hard drive - 5,400 RPM, 2.5in form factor, 9.5mm thick - With mounting bracket.
Shaun: At the first hard drive is with 5400rpms that second hard should be of same specifications then only it will be recognised in the notebook.
    Phifer8390: ok thank you

Sounds like BS to me. What do ya'll think?

    ps.
I was pretty sure it was SATA, but in another post someone mentioned getting a 200gb 7200rpm for their 9700t and the biggest 7200rpm I know of is the 160gb. Please inform me if I am incorrect.

I'm pretty sure you can put in any type of 2.5" SATA drive, no?
If you want a RAID volume then both drives need to be the same capacity, so shoot for another 250gb if you can.

    2.5" drives do come in 200GB/7200RPM :)

EDIT: misread your current hdd capacity, i'm pretty sure 250gb comes in 5400rpm flavors only.

    Well I don't care if it is a 200gb 7200rpm...
I just want the biggest 7200rpm I can get. I am going to start using it for the primary and just have the slower for a secondary where I will store all my media. Thanks for the input. Do you know where I can get the 200gb 7200rpm? I did not see it on newegg. Thanks

The size and RPM of the HDD you are putting in have no relevance. That HP guy doesn't know what he is talking about. The only thing you need to add a second HDD to your Laptop is the mounting bracket and SATA adapter. You can install any 2.5inch SATA HDD in your laptop with no problem.

The first thing that tipped me off to that guy not knowing anything is that he had to lookup what kind of HDD was in that notebook. That is the newest model notebook out on the DV9xxx series, and since the dv9000 they had SATA HDDs.

I asked in another thread thread and I was told that an adapter was not needed! I should have known better! Do you know a part number cost or anything like that? Thanks

If you bought the laptop with 2 HDDs inside, you don't need to buy another mounting bracket and SATA adapter, but if you only purchased 1 HDD you will need them. I believe they are about $40, I will have to look around the forum for the part number. I do believe that Orev knows the part number, so try messaging him about it.

I bought the bracket on e-bay...
I don't think that it includes the sata adapter...
What does the sata adapter do?
    Thanks

Basically, the connection on the motherboard isn't compatible with a standard SATA connection (I don't know why they do this). If you take out your current HDD, you will see the adapter on it.

you definitely need the SATA adapter too. The SATA adapter is the interface between the SATA hard drive and the notebook.
Here's a photo of the dv9000 SATA connector.

Wow, the tech support people are retarded...you can put in an HDD of any speed/size that you want, it doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure you do need the bracket though..it should come with the SATA adapter. For example, the link gt3 posted is of a $35 item that is both the SATA adapter and the bracket.
