Hello
My "old" friend (8710p) is getting tired.. The hd is most likely not feeling well.
Would there be any use replacing the hd with an Intel X25-m G2 160 and reinstalling with Windows 7 (64bit)?.. or do i go out and buy a new machine?..
And if so what should I go for?
cheers

That thing looks decent, a SSD would be a worthwile upgrade. If you like it, no reason not to keep it.
Also give it more RAM, if you have 2GB you'll be able to get away with it, but 4GB would be better. -
I already installed 4gb ram. What about 64bit windows 7? Just for the fun of it.. but would it run or am i beter of with the original 32bit vista?.. and is there any catch installing the hd? any adapters needed?.. questions.. thx =)

64-bit Win7 will run much better than 32-bit Vista. For the SSD there will be no adapter needed, your laptop has a standard SATA connector.

I've just put win 7 x64 on one of these (actually a 8710w) I'm trying to sell it. It is quite easy to do, just some complication with Bluetooth, wireless button, and modem drivers, but that is reasonably easy to solve.
Don't forget you can always upgrade your 'p' to a 'w' with a new GPU card, the quadro fx-3600m and heatsink would be the go. You can also unofficially shove 8GB of RAM in these too.
So there is plenty of life in the old girl yet. -
THe ssd would make your laptop like new. I'm serious you'd think you had a new pc.

A X25-M G2 would give it a nice boost. Could also consider:
- an optical bay caddy to house your original HDD.
- identifying the PLL for overclocking
- using a DIY ViDock to connected external desktop graphics
See sig if interested. -
.
Upgrading the RAM to 8GB + an Intel G2 SSD will yield the best performance gains for your 8710p. Perhaps a BluRay drive which you can get on eBay for cheap. -
The ocz vertex 120 is almost as fast
Advice on "pimping" my 8710p..
