    Hi all,

I want to buy a laptop and I found this offer at hp
that looks fine for what I need, and its quite inexpensive:

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/home/store_access.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0632401424.1111164394@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccehaddeeeglmkecfngcfkmdflldfjk.0&template_type=product_detail&product_code=PF143UAR%23ABA&promo=1&page=home&site=main

The main problem is that it is refurbished. But the refurbisher
is HP so I suppose it is OK.

Do you have any advice about that? And about the machine?

    Thanks a lot

I would say do not buy it you can get an identical one brand new for the exact same price and you get a 1 year warranty instead of 90 days. Also then you can add the better graphics card 64mb instead of 32 for 25.00 and a better battery 12cell vs 8 for 25.00 so for an extra 50.00 you get something brand new with better warranty and better specs. Plus if you are a student you could get even more off.

Starting on Sunday, Office Depot is going to have the Compaq R3000Z on sale for $500 after rebates. The R3000Z is the sames as the zv5000 except it is silver. You buy at the instore kiosk, so it is customizable then they ship it to you. Good Luck.

Thank you very much Quikster and zazonz.

zazonz: Can I configure it on the Internet, or I have to go in person to Office Depot?
Because I tried to configure a computer at Office Depot on the Internet but I could not find the option.

I just got basically the same machine, but the ZX5295us, the only two differences that I see are that mine has an Intel P4 3GHz and (more importantly) the ATI 9600 with 128MB dedicated memory. I am very happy with it. It was $700 after $350 rebate at CompUSA.

Want some advice: DONT buy refurbished.

Then again I would spent a couple more $ for brand new.

I bought mine refurbished through Ecost.com and have been pleased. My cost was about the same as the price you would pay after rebate, and I didn't have to wait 3-4 months for the rebate checks.

The warranty is only 90 days vs 1 year for new, BUT, you can purchase any of the extended/accidental damage warranties through HP just like you can for new ones.

For my money, refurbs are a way to save significant money. I've bought refurbed electronics for a while and have always been pleased. YMMV.

Thank you all. Finally I bought a Compaq R3000Z
    at shopping.hp.com with this configuration:

    Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3000+ 1.80 GHz
    15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
    64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go + 1394
    512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    8X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW Combo
    54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
    8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I paid $1154 for it, and it will be $1124 after -$30
    mail in rebate.

Congrats. 5400RPM drive will be a nice bonus. Don't forget to post your thought after you've taken it around the block.
