There's no tool to extract it or flash it as far as I know.

Grrrrrr.... got my RMA today, with the same firmware and no TRIM. But i dont have anymore whine. The combo of "no whine"+"garbage collection" is better than "whine" + "TRIM."

Did you order a whole new laptop or did you send yours in for service?

I think I give up. I called again and after being bounced around again things seemed promising until the tech support dude came back with his original BS about him not being able to send a replacement drive unless he has an error code to put in the system. So I told him I am returning the laptop so he said he would connect me with home & home office. Instead he put me in the regular wait queue and he bailed. Got bounced back to tech support a few more times and now I gave up. I am going to make this drive defective and shove it up their @$$.

Ok, this make me a little less pissed off after spending 5 hours over 2 days trying to get a replacement SSD sent to me. It seems there's still a good chance I would get the old firmware so screw it. There's no hope of a firmware update because apparently Samsung gives it to PC manufacturers but it doesn't seem like HP has any firmware for our drives. The "new" firmware has been out for like a year so we are SOL.

HP formatted my 256 ssd while in repair for the fan/whine. Actually, I wouldn't know the difference between a formatted drive, new drive, or whole new machine. Who knows. In any case, no TRIM.

Tell him the error code is no_trim. What a load of crap either way. It really sucks to spend that amount of money on an upgrade and it doesn't come with something that's been standard this year for the most part. I was just really ticked because I had inquired before I plunked down the $565 for the upgrade (well, $400 with BCB, but we won't go there), and they told me it was a Western Digital, which all come with TRIM, so I just used that angle.

Yeah, tried the WD angle and when he said it has to have a defect I said the defect is NO TRIM. I just got tired of having to go through my 5 minute explanation every time as they transferred me from tech support to home & home office & back multiple times. It's amazing they have no record in their computer of my calls.

After a lot of back and forth with the HP rep I contacted, here is what he sent me today:

"At this moment I would like to inform you that, the HP has release TRIM firmware update for HP Business Model notebook. However, HP also planning to release TRIM firmware update for Entertainment and Consumer Notebook. Once it released they will notify through Emails and HP alerts on the notebook."

I'm fine waiting for the update as long as it eventually comes out ... I just hope the rep knows what they're talking about and they stick to their word.

Well, my replacement SSD has been pushed back to September 2 now.

What is the deal? You can't tell me there's a shortage of SSD's.

Sorry, I voted but my Samsung is a 128GB. It's the vote "other firmware with TRIM supported".
    I apologize.

    Hi guys,

Not sure if anyone with an original Envy 14 + Samsung 256GB SSD is still waiting for this, but after talking with HP support on numerous occasions, I finally got them to send me the firmware update and have verified that it is firmware VBM1CH1Q with TRIM enabled.

    **WARNING & DISCLAIMER**
    • This update is from HP Support, but is not officially supported, please use this at your own risk!
    • Applying this to your drive will destroy all data, there is no way to recover this data once applied. You should make a full backup of your important files and also a system recovery disk if you don't have one (most Envy's didn't come with them).
    • I take no responsibility for any damage, data loss or issues that you may have when using this update.
    **END WARNING & DISCLAIMER**

With that ugliness out of the way, here is a link to download the update: P37240_Samsung_SSD_FW_Update_Tool.zip

You will need to create a DOS startup disk, copy these files over, boot to the disk and run the exe.

Not me, but I have the 256GB Samsung SSD that was taken out of an HP laptop and I despite installing the VBM1CH1Q update, I can not get TRIM to work in MacOS X.
