I just read this from an article online:
"AMD probably disabled the 64-bit capability of its Mobile Athlon 64 chips to produce the part for HP, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst with Mercury Research. Chip makers frequently do this to offer a lower-priced chip that PC makers can use in lower-end systems."
entire article at site below: (I did not want to copy & paste the entire long article.)

My question is, if I order the HP zv500v, is part of it "disabled"? Is it not a full AMD 64 bit processor?!

The Athlon XP-M 2800+ and 3000+ CPUs that HP offers are Athlon 64's with their 64-bit section and most of their L2 cache disabled. They also offer standard Athlon 64 notebook chips, which are what I recommend. I ordered an Athlon 64 3200+ with mine and have successfully installed 64-bit Fedora Core 2 Linux on it.

AMD Athlon(TM) XP-M 2800+ (1.60 GHz/128K L2 cache) -$100.00
AMD Athlon(TM) XP-M 3000+ (1.60 GHz/256K L2 cache) -$75.00
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3000+ 1.80 GHz Included in price
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ 2.00 GHz +$50.00
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz +$100.00
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3700+ (2.40 GHz) +$200.00
The XP-M's are 32-bit-only 128KB/256KB cache chips. The Athlon 64's are, as you said, 64-bit capable 1MB cache chips. I wish HP hadn't talked AMD into building the new XP-M's as it just causes confusion, as this thread shows.
I recommend at least the 3400+, given the modest price premium. I'd buy the 3700+ if I were buying today. -
What is AMD Athlon 64 FX please?
Thanks for the other answer too.

The Athlon 64 FX is strictly for desktops. It supports dual-channel memory (as do the new 939-pin Athlon 64 desktop CPUs) and it's clock multiplier isn't locked (fun for overclockers). It's *expensive*.
