I recently got dv9700t, and it's been giving me seemingly random beeps. I had the speaker muted, so it's coming from the internal speaker, perhaps near the touchpad. It's not the loud BIOS beep, and its tone is more like the XP's default double beep for "Device Connect." Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how to stop it?

Thanks in advance for your input.

As for temporary fix, just go to Control Panel, Sound, Sounds, and disable sound for Device Connect/Device Disconnect.

As for permanent fix, the problem is most likely caused by some driver conflict, involving with your USB devices (duh..)... like USB mouse, keyboard, mp3 player...
have you updated your drivers lately? if so, find out which one, just reinstall the driver.

    good luck

No, it's not the same sound as "Device Connect" whether it be for XP or Vista. Its tone is similar to that of XP's, but it sounds like "chuh-cuh-luk" (pardon my onomatopoeia). And I did try every sound in Control Panel, but nothing matched this sound. I don't think it's driver conflict either. It still emits that sound when the notebook's connected to nothing.

Two things I can think of checking for as the sound source:

    * Check for HP QuickTouch software and try shutting it down if it's running.

    * Check mic-in levels on audio mixer control, mute it. Or shut down the mic altogether.

So I had a chance to examine this issue more thoroughly, and I think it's coming from the hard drive when it's idling. It's not the noise you hear when it's writing or defragmenting. Also, immediately after it gives off that sound, the motor spins faster and then later slows down. This process repeats at least once a minute when idling. My hard drive is Hitachi 250GB 5400RPM SATA, and I was wondering if this is typical of Hitachi drives. Btw, thank you two for your input.

I did more research on this, and I think it's the same sound as what's called the "marble sound." As I mentioned before, it happens when HD is idling. Also, it happens just before my computer shuts down. Does anyone here have Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00. And is this normal for this drive? It's really annoying and much louder than typical HD grinding sound.

My hitachi drive produces a light beep (similar to when you power off the computer) when my computer idles.
