    Hi all,

I've read the sticky and many threads here but I'm confused. What is the symptons of the backlight/inverter problems?

My DV2000, when power off the monitor is dark, when power on, the monitor lit/iluminated. But nothing on the screen. The harddrive led blinks so it's accessing.

I thought it was inverter so I replaced it with the $8+ from y'allstore. It didn't work.

What else I can do? Please help, thanks.

No, external monitor does not work.

Actually the sticker at the bottom said dv2700 but the bezel monitor show dv2000.

This problem was 4 months ago and I sent it to HP under warranty. Now the warranty is over. :(

What can I do to fix the NVIDIA chip? I have an IBM thinkpad with defective ATI chip and did a "reflow" with heat gun, it works. Can I do the same?

Reflow might work. I'm not sure if anyone's tried it yet. Surely somebody must have. It's a solder problem within the NVIDIA chip package rather than bad soldering on the motherboard but the principle should apply. If your notebook is covered under the enhanced warranty program I linked to I'd use that (extends the warranty another year for this specific problem).

I will try to reflow and let you know the result.

About your link, I checked and it doesn't have dv2700 listed? When I called HP few days ago they didn't say anything about the defective nvidia chip, they only said that it will cost me to fix it since I'm out of warranty. I think I cannot extend the warranty if my computer is broken now? I think they said that they will check my laptop first to make sure the comp is working before I can buy another year... I think they said they will check via online, not sure how...

See if you can talk with a case manager. If they know that you know what's going on they can be very helpful.

Which NVIDIA GPU do you have?

Hi brian, thanks for taking the time to answer my problems.
I have the NVIDIA 8400M GS 256MB (G86-630-A2). I've already disassemble everything and is now trying to reflow.

Do you think I can still work it out with the case manager? I've already been told that my laptop is out of warranty so they will charge me for a fix.

Wanted to update that finally I got the video working now. I did reflow the Nvidia chip. It was a difficult task to disassembly and put back everything but... well worth it.

Nice work! I'll keep that in mind next time I find a dead dv2000/6000/9000 on Craigslist.
