    Computer: HP Pavilion dv-6568se
    OS: Windows Vista 32-bit

Problem: My nephew gave me this laptop. The display is/was not working however no problem using an external monitor. What I originally wanted to do was create recovery discs but could not because it seemed alot of crucial system files had been deleted so I performed a fresh install of Vista (x86). For video drivers I went to NVIDIA's website (after trying HP's video drivers) and downloaded the most current ones for my laptop. Now the display works as soon as Windows Vista actually begins loading. However, the "pre-screens" like the HP logo or instructions such as press F1 or this or esc for that do not display. For example, if I wanted to get into safe mode or the BIOS for any reason I would have to attach an external monitor so I could see those screens. It's not until Windows starts loading that I see any display whatsoever. And I have had no problem using an external monitor.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

The GPU in this laptop is the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS which is notorious for failing. The soldering material that was used to attach the GPU to the motherboard was of a bad quality.

It is highly likely that you have a bad GPU. If you're good with computer you can try to re-flew it. There is a thread in the forum explaining who this can be done. Search for the 'oven trick'.
