I had been unable to find the network control driver for my gateway laptop after a fresh xp install until, out of desperation, I decided to search for it from the recovery disk. There it was, neatly stowed away and waiting to save my ass. A few clicks later and the driver was installed and I was able to connect to the internet.

If I had discovered this sooner, it would have saved me a few hours downloading and installing drivers for both my DV9207 and my Gateway 3520GZ. For those who are thinking about installing fresh Vista or XP, the recovery disk has all the correct drivers for your computer, and using it to install them will save you a lot of time.

I hope this will help others. And to those who have been helping me, thank you.
