I was pondering upgrading to a dv8t (from my HDX18t) and noticed the dv8t is no longer available!!

I am a huge fan of the HDX18t 18" display. It's one of the best displays I've seen. BUT, the QX9300 is getting dated, and was looking for something more powerful.

Any idea if there is another 18" HP something-or-another on the horizon?

Hey, old friend. Long time. :)

HP's done with these money losing large notebooks. 17.3" is as high as they are going to go. Even those don't sell anywhere as well as their sweet spot bread and butter 14-15" notebooks.

For the future, I'm thinking about going with an external IPS LCD monitor paired with a 15" notebook. Perhaps from Sager so I'll have the graphics power to drive a 27" IPS LCD @ 2560 x 1440. Leave the lid down set to do nothing when down and getting a remote to power notebook on/off/sleep.

Hey 2.0, thanks for the info. Nice to hear from you!

Too bad about the big ones...love that 18.4" LCD!!!

What 27" you looking at? I've worked with a couple the Dell U2711, and drooled over the Apple Cinema 27" at the Apple Store. I think if I were going to get one, the Apple might win over the Dell. I think the Dell has a displayport problem, which leaves only the DVI as a viable input.

What other options have you seen for a 27"?

Those were the two I am looking at. Didn't know about the displayport issue on the Dell.

But the Apple Cinema display will be hard to beat since it has sound, webcam/mic and acts as a USB hub.

Only thing is, the Dell's refresh speed is twice as fast @ 6ms and has a card reader.

The card readers in Dell's monitors are lame. I use either whatever is in my notebook/PC, or get an external USB reader that supports UDMA transfers, as it's much faster for CF cards and SD cards that support it.

Apparently, people (including myself) have issues with the displays blanking out, or not coming on at all when using DP and some video cards. The two I setup for a friend had that problem, and we had to resort to using Dual link DVI cables.

The Apple display is even a little cheaper than the Dell, and it sure looks nicer to me (having seen both, but not side-by-side, of course!).

Come to think of it, just get a 27" iMac. Same display, but, the mini-displayport is both an output and an INPUT, meaning you can use it as an external monitor to a PC, or use it as a Mac!!!

You always wanted a Mac, right?

Sorry to hear the dv8t is gone. Someone sat next to me with one the other day, and I must say they are gorgeous machines.

I wouldn't be upset about the disappearance of 18.4" notebooks. That guy was just a few feet away, and if I didn't know that specific model, I would not have known his computer was 1.1" bigger than mine. You can just get a 17".

*Raising hand up ready to backslap* :D

Didn't know that could be done with an iMac. If bootcamp were perfect, I might consider a Mac. Can't use OSX for the things I do. VM insufficient also.

I didn't either until I read about it. I occasionally dabble in Mac OSX, mostly to support clients and keep up-to-date. I use a Dell Studio 14 loaded with that "insufficient" OS (can't say the words on this forum since it's not an Apple), but for a few bucks more, getting a 27" imac and using it as an external display plus as an iMac sounds intriguing!
