This is my first post to this forum and I have mainly been looking around on NBR for information about cooling my new DV6T-6000. It has the i7-2670QM, 1 gigabyte 6770M, and 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM. My main issue is with the heat that the system generates when under load. When playing Skyrim on medium settings and windowed, I will notice the CPU temperatures peaking at around 68 C and the GPU hovers at about 60 - 65 C. Occasionally, depending on the ambient temperature, these numbers will rise to around 70 or 71. I usually average about 45 C just browsing the web. I feel really uncomfortable having the fans on their noticeably louder settings.
Since then, I have tried an assortment of coolers. I've had the basic Antec cooler with two 80 mm fans sucking air through the aluminum holes away from the base of the laptop. I have also had many that blow towards the base of the laptop including the CoolerMaster NotePal U2, CoolerMaster Infinite Evo Duo, and the Thermaltake Massive23 ST.
The various coolers I have tried succeed in bringing down the temperature of the base of the computer (cold to touch) but none have seemed to bring me any major drops in temperature according to the internal temperature sensors. I use CoreTemp and SpeedFan to collect my data.
I guess my questions would be:
What does vent on the back left of the notebook do? I have tried putting a fan up to that vent; no dice.
Is there a cooler on the market that has an effect on the DV6T's internal temperatures or a computer with similar vent layouts? If you've accomplished this, could you explain how?
I used to own an HDX16 with a 9600GT and it's bottom had many more vents than this model. Also, the DV6T lacks the venting underneath the CPU fan. Is that necessary for the fan in the DV6T?
Any input is appreciated, however I'd like to avoid repasting the CPU and GPU.Though these temperatures are pretty hot, they're not burning to the point where it is unacceptable. Thanks.

1. Back vent is also an exhaust vent.. a smaller one.
2. No, not yet.
To make u feel better, my CPU temps hover around 53c-58c when browsing the web while listening to music with Foobar2k and ambient temp was around 32c-33c. -
Thanks for the reply - I almost thought that after 200 views, nobody knew anything.
I currently have it on the CM Storm SF-19. I figure this will be the best I can do for it until someone figures this cooling thing out. I feel like when people make threads that ask "what cooler is best for the DV6?", the reply should just be there is not one that works for it. Hopefully with this thread, I can save someone the time and effort of going to Fry's and trying every single cooler. -
Seriously don't sweat it. I have the same laptop and my temps
are 85-95 for cpu when gaming. The cooler maybe drops it 2 degrees.
Using coolsense (and locking cpu at 2.0ghz) gets it down to 80 degrees.
A laptop is not like a tower computer. My tower runs at 4.7ghz and
never goes above 70 degrees! You just can't cool a quad in a 15" form
factor, but according to HP and Intel, 95 degrees is fine, the cpu
will throttle at 100 degrees and shut off if higher and could get damaged.
WILL your cpu running at 95 degrees last 10 years like most cpus? NO, it
will probably last 7 years, in which time you will have gotten a new laptop
as this one will be obsolete and you will give it to your kids. -
It's not so much extending the life of this laptop that concerns me but it's more of the discomfort of having the left side of the keyboard and handrest heat up. I have a tower as well and I guess I'm just carrying over standards from a bigger, more spacious platform.
I'm am still dumbfounded as to why pushing cold air into the vents does nothing to the temperature. I get to believing, sometimes, that the vents on the bottom do nothing. -
The vents on the bottom are tiny, they don't do much. People cut holes in the bottom big and where the vents should be, then the temps are lower, but not
worth it for an ugly non-resellable laptop. The heat is acceptable for it. -
You don't put cold air on the side vents, but the slots on the bottom over the CPU and GPU. The vents on the side and back are pushing out hot air from the fan that's taking heat away from the CPU and GPU. I cut away the caes below the CPU and GPU to open it up so there can be better airflow.

@HTWingNut: I figured they were exhausts but when desperation kicked in, I gave each vent a try. I have seen people cut away the plastic and make their own vents but I'm not entirely sure I'd be down for a mod like that.
When I used to own the HDX16, I noticed HP's notoriety for dealing with heat but never thought I'd be on the beating end of the stick.
Any notebook coolers that work for the DV6TQE??
