I'm looking at upgrading the hard drive of my dv6275us with a 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for $90. I was looking at the Hitachi Travelstar 5K320, but the Seagate at 7200 rpm is only $20 more than the 5400 rpm Hitachi.

Should I have any problem with the Seagate? Would anyone go with the slower Hitachi, instead?

    Thanks,
    Bill

I know the Seagate drive is supported by the hard drive protection software (if you use it) and the Hitachi is not.

My vote is for the Seagate since its 7200RPM instead of 5400RPM, so it will be a little faster on boot times and is supported by the hard drive protection.

I am looking at the same drive too, and the zipzoomfly link you have is 20 bucks cheaper than Newegg -- so thanks for the link! :D

Glad to help out, but what is hard drive protection software?

    Thanks,
    Bill

The Hitachi 5K320 is one of the quietest and coolest HDDs available, and the Seagate 7200.3 is one of the fastest HDDs available.

HDD Protection is useful, like when you're throwing/dropping your notebook on the couch from a height, but not useful if you accidentally, abruptly bump the HDD side of the notebook into a desk or wall.

You can get a HDD with an in-built G-Shock Protection or FFS, and its functionality is coded into the drive firmware, so the in-built drive feature is much more reliable and efficient.

So which way would you suggest, Andy? Is the Seagate 7200.3 noticeably hotter than the Hitachi 5K320? Is the Seagate noticeable faster in real life applications?

My Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 is 50C (121F) right now.

I'm pretty particular about my notebook, so I'm not sure how much HDD protection plays in there.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Hitachi didn't work in my DV6000... I've been using Seagate ever since. I've had 2 RMA's, but I think I finally got a good one.

I'm using the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320 GB on my dv6500t. I have had no problems for the most part...sometimes though the hard drive is not detected by the BIOS during startup, which causes a "No operating system found" error to pop up at times. But when it's working, the hard drive works great. To me, the Seagate Momentus is a significant upgrade over my Toshiba 120 GB 5400RPM drive (not to mention the 5 year warranty as well :)). Overall, I'd recommend the hard drive, since Seagate is known to have a good track record in terms of hard drives.

However, please note that Seagate provides Momentus drives WITHOUT the G-Force hard drive protection. Model numbers ending with "AS" do NOT have the G-Force protection, while those ending in "ASG" do have the G-Force protection. I believe the one with $90 does not have the protection. See the data sheet from Seagate's website - http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_momentus_7200_3.pdf

    Comparison
Yes, there is a noticeable difference in performance, but not a great difference in temps or noise.

You're right about that. I was on buy.com and saw that one was "AS" and the other "ASG." Looking at Seagate.com, I suspected the "G" stood for G-Force protection. Buy.com has the "ASG" for $96.99 with free shipping, about the same price as the "AS" at ZipZoomFly.com with the shipping charge.

    Thanks for confirming that.

I had overlooked your link at first but later noticed it. That chart nails the choice. Thanks.

Just ordered the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421ASG from Buy.com for $96.99 with free shipping.

Within an hour and a half of ordering, Buy.com increased the price to $109.47 shipped. ;)
