just wondering whether prolongued use will rub out the gloss and affect the imprint underneath it - especially the palm rest and the touchpad.

it wont rub it out but it catches a lot of fingerprints which can be a pain to clean

the palm rest is fine as long as you clean it and keep it clean from oils

The finish itself is pretty solid. I have had mine for 1.5yrs and have only one scratch on the lid and the palm rests are as good as new. So, definately no complaints about the durability of the finish.

In my opinion the top of my laptop is almost like a new black shiny paint job. It looks really nice when clean but it gets dirty pretty easily. I bought these 3 dollar wipes from walmart. They're great. I use them for every part of the laptop, it's best used when theres a lot of smudges on screen and on exterior.

Replacement? for normal wear and tear? You would be hard pressed to find a laptop where the keys didnt wear smooth over time. I doubt HP would see this as a defect.
