Any reason not to return this?

I just got to thinking...maybe I don't need to return this...

Bought a new nw9440, received it on Thursday.

Moved a few files over, installed some new software...started acting a little weird, wouldn't recognize CS2, wouldn't let me uninstall it and reinstall...so I did a full recovery. It formatted the drive and went through the recovery and rebooted.

    FATAL ERROR:

Registery could not be updated. To address this problem please contact computer manufacturer.

    The log read:
Setup encountered an error while trying to upgrade the Internet Explorer.

Of course all the computer manufacturer had to say was "I'll send a new recovery CD"...thanks but no thanks. I only have 10 days to return this and by the time I receive that CD it will be too late.

But do I try to fix this? Could this be the sign of a bad system or just bad luck?

I made recovery CDs, and have tried to recover from them, from the partition that HP makes on its own, tried to just restore from a date...everything brings me to the same point.

    Any thoughts?

They will make it work. If they send you the new disks and it still doesnt work then HP will repair it under warranty.

If you are unhappy with having bought a nw9440 and rather have something else then return it. If you want a nw9440 then you will have to wait for the disks or maybe longer till you send it in and get a new one.

The only problem is that if you repair it under warranty, and it is past the return period (which apparently only has 10 days left)...you get refurbished parts for repair. Nothing like purchasing a new computer, only to basically have it replaced with a refurb one.

The system I bought is refurbished.

That's what concerns me...is an error like this a sign of a bad system or just something that happens and once fixed will be fine.

I was hoping that they'd just send someone out, fix it and we'd be on our way...I did pay extra for the next day support - they said it didn't apply since it wasn't hardware related (which seems like a load of crap).

Sounds to me just a software problem. I would wipe the partition out and install a fresh copy of XP and see what happens.

Refurbished though a little cheaper isn't worth the hassle. That's why they're refurbished... something went wrong with it in the first place! And the return policy is a great deal less than a full new laptop.. I wonder why.

Refurbished does not mean that something was wrong. It could be a return, a cancelled order, all sorts of things. HP is taking very good care of it, they are taking the system back and replacing it with a new one.

A hassle? Yes. Worth the $1000 I saved. Yes.

Make sure you keep it until you receive the new one.
