I'm on a severely limited budget for purchasing a xmas present for my son. He needs internet and modest gaming capabilities and the DV4000 looks like the ticket. I need to keep this purchase to as close to 1,000 dollars as possible.

Are there any sights with coupons and/or upcoming "specials" that I should be on the look-out for that might help me acquire this notebook for my budget?

    Thanks!

Be sure to talk with HP about gettting the academic discount (assuming your son is in school, or as you are on a tight budget, you are an educator). This saves about 6% on the cost of the machine. Also, configure a Conpaq V4000T (same machine, a little cheaper) it with minimum RAM and then buy more through Newegg or Tiger Direct. Get the 740 processor, the 80 gig HDD, the regular CD burner and XP home edition... with the discount this comes in at just about $1,030.

I would not call the gaming capabilities of dv4000 'modest' /with the x700/. zv6000 or r4000 are more of the "modest-gaming" type notebooks and they should come at less than $1000 and be pretty good at almost anything. You might even consider v2000z though its really modest in gaming.
check www.costco.com and www.ecost.com for some good deals; at least you can compare those with hpshopping

    Agreed, X700 kicks butt.

I also recommend the Compaq V4000t over the HP dv4000, because it's a bit cheaper. Get all the non-upgradeable items when you buy, don't bother with the RAM/HDD if you're really tight on cash - they can be easily upgraded later.

Well, HP doesn't go handing off coupons like Dell does, but will certainly give you good value. If you have a Costco membership, buy the notebook at a Costco store, or online at costco.com. That'll save you 100-200 bucks right there.
Reguarding the notebook's GPU: what games will you son be playing? If its nothing harsh, integrated gfx may do the job fairly well.

Costco doesn't sell any DV4000s with X700s.....yet. But you can customize a DV4000 from them. It will cost a bit more than if you do it from HP directly, but you get their 6 month return policy, even on custom made computers.
