Any way of gaining more freedom over backlight?

I have a HP 8510P which is a wonderful machine. However at times (usually working at night) the minimum backlight brightness is still pretty bright for my nocturnal eyes.

Is there any way of patching the backlight control to reduce the minimum brightness?

I've tried fiddling with the usual brightness/contrast which works in a way, but doesn't ease the nocturnal eye the same way as a dimmer backlight would. My previous lappy, a great old Asus M6Ne (sounds like the latest 'flu virus) went so dim you'd think it was made for vampires. Perfect! :)
