So when i customized my laptop on hp.com I noticed a service / program called LoJack that could trace the thief of your rig and possibly get him prosecuted. My nb goes with me everywhere....well just home, work and school. So does anybody have a successful story to share w/ the rest of the community?

This has actually more to do with your local police. A stolen laptop isnt exactly top priority. Not to mention possible complications with the tracking of the software

Theives would have probably stripped or reformatted your computer by the take police handles this matter. Also you require subpoena (court order) to retrieve any information from an ISP, which police does and takes time.

I know stolen laptops are inevitable but prevention will always be the key. I dont think this program is worth it, getting insurance is more effective.

Insurance and backup. Insurance is not much consolation if you've just lost all your important data and have no backup.

And for further measure, don't leave anything you care about on your hard drive unencrypted. Most businesses have policies in place regarding this, but not all. If you use your laptop for business and the IT department isn't demanding that all sensitive data be encrypted, then you should take action yourself to make sure it's encrypted. Think of it this way: Would you like to be the reason your business now has a laptop data encryption policy? :)

Truecrypt is an excellent, excellent, excellent way to make it very easy to keep your data strongly encrypted and still maintain an easy workflow.

I've read that once your laptop is stolen with a Lo-jack you let the company, Lo-Jack, know that your gear was stolen and it's up to them to do the detective work including reporting the finding to a law enforcement agency. The thing is you have to register your computer with Lo-Jack so it can be traced. Though the culprit can delete the hard drive, their software stays there still hidden.

Well at least w/ the Lo-Jack software you get the price of the software back if your laptop is not recovered.

lol....the price of software itself is not worth the data and the laptop you had lose..
simply said..hard drive insurance is the BEST way to protect your laptop(who cares the laptop, all ppl want is their data is recovered)..

I've learned my lesson by placing all important information to an external USB memory stick so when the laptop is stolen at least you have them. BTW, don't place the memory stick in the same case as your laptop. Make use of the lanyard and put it around your neck when traveling. I've heard you can also make the memory stick as your boot drive so the laptop is essentially useless without it.

I don't know about LoJack, but I will read some more. But it sounds like LoJack is installed on a hidden partition on the Hard Drive so even if the main drive was reformatted and reinstalled the OS the LoJack software will stay hidden on another partition on the drive. Most people don't know about these types of hidden partitions (DCO's and HPA's) so they don't even think to look for them.
