I have two HP zv5000 series laptops.

    HP zv5340
    Athlon 64
    3400+
    645 MHg
    512 Ram
    WinXP Home
    DVD-RW

So far I love the one listed above. No problems. Runs extremely cool, don't know that I've ever even heard the fan really. Very Quiet.

    Hp zv5420
    Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
    384 RAM
    CD-RW
    WinXP Home
The 5420 however is another story. Runs EXTREMELY hot. Within the first month the power cord will not stay connected to the power supply in the computer. It will if you wiggle, push, turn, and jack with it for a while. And when you get it to connect you better hold it still or it will return to battery.

I've made sure the prongs inside the actually plus on the end of the cord and that is not the problem. They connect to the male connector inside the back of the computer just fine.

I've heard that there might be a problem where the power board inside the computer may need to be resoldered. Would this be complicated to fix? I've torn into a laptop before and know they are pretty picky about the order of how you remove each component.

Does anyone know if the powerboard is built into the MB or not on the 5420?

Looking for some input and help. Thanks

The P4 will run very hot since it wasn't designed to be energy efficient. The Athlon has a method of throttling the speed based on need, helping to keep the heat down.

As for the power connector problem, I've read other people mention this problem and you'll have to get inside the case to properly fix it. However, another option would be to use this cable (http://www.techexcess.net/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=DV318A ). It's main purpose is for connecting to external media devices, but it also allows power to be applied through it, running the laptop and charging the battery. To me, this seems like a much cheaper solution.

    Good luck!

Checked out the cable. To be sure I'm clear. This cable will not plug into the back where the orginal power cord plugs in?

It will by pass that for power and it also will plug into the brick?

Yes, both are the same. I think they are on to something with this thing. It IS the fix for the powerboard problem.

I order it just after my last post. Within 20 minutes after my order, I got the UPS tracking number.

    They are on the ball!

Thanks so much for the link and all you help!
