Can't post a link, new here.

Just search for dv7 1133cl costco to take a peek, expires the 26th

I jumped on this deal as soon as it went on sale. If you customize a DV7z on HP's website with almost identical specifications (they aren't offering the RM-70, they are now offering RM-72 on up), it comes out to roughly $1,200 not including applicable taxes.

I personally like the laptop including the aesthetics. At stock, it runs fairly fast and quiet. However, after a few minutes of it running out of the box, I quickly performed a clean installation of Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit). I did such for 2 reasons:

    1. I have personally had touch-and-go stability issues with 64 bit Vista on a few PC's. Most of these issues are due to x86 applications running in emulation mode in the x64 bit environment. These stability issues I managed to narrow down to a couple applications. In addition, I found the Adobe Flash Player 9 under Internet Explorer x86 in x64 Vista would either crash IE or the system all together. There are probably a multitude of factors that could have been going into that (as seen with a Google search) but those issues were resolved by going back to 32 bit Vista.

    2. Clean installation of Vista gets rid of all of the bloatware that HP syspreps into their PCs. This helps you control what is on your PC and aides it to have better performance.

Anyway, the only other thing I did to boost the laptop was upgrading from the Western Digital Blue Scorpio 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive to Seagate's 7200.3 Momentus 320 GB 7200 RPM hard drive I got off of Newegg. That helped speed up startup time and other various applications.

Casual gaming is okay at best. The ATI chipset allows you to play older games or low-demanding graphics games like Civilization 4. That's okay though because I have a desktop PC that I'd use for gaming purposes.

The LCD has a nice crisp picture and the system is really quiet (I lot more than my old HP dv5000 CTO).

Overall, I'd say that the Laptop is an excellent purchase for that price.

The ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3200 IGP is a BIG selling point on the dv4z/5z/7z! I get so sick of people trashing the HP "z" models based on their "slower" processors! In reality, 99% of the ones who make those comments have never touched a laptop with an AMD processor!!!

For those of us "in the know", it's possible spend $700 and get a dv7 configuration that can hang with $1000 dv7's with the Intel T5800 base processor. And the $700 AMD-based dv7 with the ATI HD 3200 can eat the Intel models' lunch if it has the standard Intel GMA 4500MHD IGP!

Another well-kept secret, the HD 3200 runs neck-and-neck with the nVIDIA 9200M GS (a $100 option on the dv7t).

I got that computer and I really like it. It also looks like it is on sale again. I got it at 649 and I feel like it is a great deal! I researched for a week or more before I bought it, and I could not find comparable features anywhere for 649.

I am coming off a really slow desktop from like 2005, but it seems very fast to me. There is nothing that I do (internet/music/movies/casual gaming/pictures) that I cannot do fast and without much issue.

Someone mentioned doing 32 bit vista, that is probably a good idea, I have had some mild issues with the vista that came with it.

The screen is giant. The speakers are ok, though I usually just use a headset. I had to get the touchpad repaired, it was broken when it arrived.

It does get fingerprints a lot, but I can live with that. The over-all look of it is gorgeous, and the keys are bronze smooth and shiney-- so if you don't already touch type you should learn how with this because the light can shine in certain ways and make it harder to read the keys if you are a hunt and peck typist.

Overall, I recommend this computer, especially if you can get it at 649!

Thanks! The new flash has been working great in x64 OS and the laptop was good up until about a couple months ago. There seems to be an overheating issue related to this laptop, causing it to randomly crash/freeze up with a blank screen. This seems to be related to the old ATI/AMD video chipset. I'm not really biased towards AMD nor Intel - rather I judge them based upon price and performance. I am reluctant now to go again with HP, as I am terribly disappointed with the quality of this product. I have usually been satisfied with HP but now I may look at other brands (maybe Sony or Toshiba). As for AMD, I will wait for them to catch up with Intel.

Meanwhile, this laptop will probably turn into a paperweight soon. :(
