I author a lot of DVD's and just gave it a shot on my Envy 14 beats. VRD, ImgBurn, and W7 all consistently crashed with several different .iso's.

    I can burn CD's fine.

Does the drive support DL-DVD burning?

I know it can read them just fine

I used OptiDrive and it says it the drive can support DVD+/- DL's.

I'm using the same spindle of DVD + DL's I've been using for months and already made about 15 coasters today. I was able to successfully burn the same file on my old laptop, so was wondering if it was the dvd drive or my config on the new laptop.

I guess a better question would be, has anyone been successful at burning DVDs to dual layers on their Envy 14? If so, what program and brand of dvd's are you using?

Anyone know if there is any upgraded firmware on the dvd rom? I couldn't find any information on it. Thanks!

I was able to successfully burn some Memorex DVD+R DL's.

Must've just hit a run of bad discs

In all honesty...I have had great success with Verbatim DL+R discs. I have 50/50 on Kodak and 20/80 with Memorex. Try Verbatim...I get almost 100% success...a bit more expensive...but as they say...You get what you pay for

Would you use these double layered discs to create your recovery discs? If so, how many would it take for the Envy 17 3D?

I was able to burn a DL DVD not long ago with my Envy 17's Bluray/DVD combo.

I did a set of recovery discs on my original Envy. Took 5 4.7GB discs...I would anticipate at least 3

The Envy does not allow use of DVD-RLs for recovery disc creation, according to the recovery manager.

The manual for the Envy 17 3D on page 70 under the topic Creating Restore Media, Guidelines: "Purchase high quality DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R DL,or DVD+R DL discs. Note: Read-write discs such as CD-RW, DVD+-RW, double-layer DVD+-RW, and BD-RE (rewritable Blue-ray) discs are not compatible with the Recovery Manager software."

Is the manual in error? I am waiting for my Envy 17 3D to be shipped. I would like to have the correct discs on hand to create the recovery discs and fewer discs in the set would be better. Have you tried to use the DL discs and found that the Recovery Manager software would not accept them?

I would have to say so, because I know I am not hallucinating about it telling me I could not use dual-layer DVDs. At least I hope. lol Maybe I was confusing it with the double-layer DVD+-RWs. For what it's worth, I never inserted a single one after reading whatever it is I read.

Did you use DL DVDs to create your recovery discs?
