Anyone had app problems with HP's DEP?

Recently I've been having some trouble launching a couple of apps (one being Flash Renamer) on my nc6320. After uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times I wondered what might be up as I've been able to run this app in the past. What I've discovered is that if I disable Data Execution Prevention in the Bios via ProtectTools and reboot it launches and works fine.

Now Flash Renamer is a simple file renaming tool so I'm not sure what upsets HP's DEP. Has anyone else has similar issues with DEP or found alternative solutions? I can't find any other settings apart from enable and disable outside of XP's DEP.

Edit - I managed to get the app to work using the Windows DEP settings. Although when I tried this before with another app (the rather old RegCleaner) it didn't work. Hmmm..

HP did not invet DEP... it's standard in all newer platforms... to add program exceptions on DEP (to software that has problems with it) see the pic below

Eh? I never said (or implied) they invented it!

Anyway as I mentioned in the edit I changed the setting in XP as you've highlighted but the other app refused to work when I did that previously. Suffice to say I'm no longer using that app...well it is a few years out of date now, so probably sensible anyway.

If you look into slipstreaming you can actually remove DEP from Windows XP.

I am running a semi barebones Windows XP, has all the functions I need and none that I don't. The CD of my current slipstream with all Windows XP updates up to June 22nd is only 300 MB, compared to the stock SP2 CD which I believe is bordering 600 MB.

    Just a thought ;)

    Disable DEP:

Edit the file boot.ini, add the following parameter /noexecute=AlwaysOff

Do not copy and paste this bit below. This is an _example_

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect

I had to disable DEP on my machine in order to get some photo editing software (Nikon Capture, to be exact) to run. Before that, every time I'd run it, I get a BSOD, then my PC would restart.

I thought DEP within XP was supposed to notify you when it stop an app running. I've seen nothing in any of my examples, the latest being Qwix when I was trying to create an iso file.
