Mine do not seem to work. I have disabled them and re-enabled them. I have tried every possible combination of settings. They just do not work. The keyboard will stay lit until the computer goes to sleep...

I cannot find the drivers on the HP website, and I am not very computer savvy.

Anyone have any recommendations that do not require shipping this thing back to HP?

Do the little red lights show up to the left of the display?

Even when on minimum distance mine wont shut them off unless I am like 4 feet away so that might be something to look at.

Woohoo! That did it! Thank you for the help!

In case anyone else has this issue, be sure to try the minimum setting for the sensitivity!

I thought I had tried it with the 10 second delay, but apparently not...

My proximity sensors don't seem to do anything on my 17... So your solution is to set the parameters to minimum/10 seconds?

Honestly, this feature can nearly be annoying at times. Mine are super-sensitive. It has its appeal, but it's overall kind of gimmicky, IMO. I still love the backlit keyboard in general. The old Envy's lighting looks downright crappy and embarrassing in comparison.

Even on minimum they dont turn of the keyboard unless you are around 3 or 4 feet away, so they may not do anything on other settings because they see a wall or something...

I agree, like if I close my lid so that its about 3 or 4 inches open at the front, they keep the backlight on all night...

Its cool, but they cant differentiate between people, itself, walls and anything else..

I would agree that is a wiz-bang feature, but it is pretty neat when it works.

I guess maximum is just way too sensitive.

BTW, I have an Envy 17. Are the Proximity Sensors on the side of the screen on the smaller versions?

Huh, never thought about the wall that is just behind me (and thus facing the laptop)... It's about 1,5 meter from the sensors (sorry, can't really count with feets! ), so maybe that's the thing.
More testing coming up tonight !

I noticed that even on the minimum distance setting, it needed to be about 6 feet (2 meters for you, fish ;)) from a wall with the monitor angled for my normal viewing preference.

Well... YEAH!!! Just tested it with the laptop oriented to an empty space, and it did work like a charm! Too bad the wall behind my desk is too close, it won't be of any use for me in my current room configuration.
Or anyone would know if there is a way to "sub-level" the minimum detection setting? :)

Dont have any problems with my 17 envy 3d.

I think the feature is quite nifty. Definitely nice to have but not absolutely necessary

So far it's the favorite feature of anyone who's used my PC.

And it seems to have $hit the bed again...

Settings are still the same (minimum distance and 10 seconds) but even after uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, it does not work. Computer is in the exact same location that it was when it worked last.

No clue, but I think the gimmicky part of it is showing its head...

Mine works minimum/10sec. Just move out of the line of sight and it dims. Although I can't justify having two red lights in my peripheral for my keyboard to dim when I'm not there. If I'm away from my computer for more than 10 minutes, I'll just shut the lid.

That's the approach I took. I had my Envy for about 30 minutes before I decided the proximity sensor was too distracting and I just disabled it. I wish there was an option for a standard timer like most laptops, but like you said, if I'm away longer than 10 minutes, I usually just close the lid.

If you get rid of the software, the red lights will turn off and become invisible. Mine were not visible and did not go on with a new windows install but after installing the proximity censor, they turned on again.

But I like this feature, feels like a boss when I come back and sit the screen goes back to full brightness and keyboard turns on.

I like the feature, in fact, it was one of the selling points for me. The proximity sensor was constantly blinking non stop. I thought for awhile that it was the hard drive activity light. Ill give it another shot and see how it works out.

I have the new Envy 15.. bought it October 27, 2012, and my infrared proximity sensor is on the left hand side of the screen about halfway up.
I went to the adjustments tab for it and turned the dang thing OFF. It got on my nerves always turning off my keyboard lights. I want them ON, and not going off everytime I lean back a little too far. It is just a gimmick anyways, kinda like the fingerprint reader that was on my last HP notebook that got stolen last month at only one year old. If I had my choice, I miss my fingerprint reader, it was a much better gimmicky device. I miss it, and liked it much more than this proximity sensor which I have not turned OFF..
Anyways, yep, us smaller guys have the little red lights on the left side of our display screen. I have it turned off now.. I never noticed if there was also one on the right side.. The only one i ever noticed when it was on was the one on the left side... and i am too lazy to re-activate it to check to see if it's on both sides.
I am 90% sure it was only on the one side :)

No issues with mine. I did change the range to maximum and have been a lot happier with that.
