When I select no wallpaper on the destop, just background color, there's a visible darker area, about 1 inch by 1/2 inch in the upper/center location. Particularly noticeable with grey background. And it is not visible with black or white backgrounds or when there's a desktop wallpaper or an application on the screen. This looks like a defect of the LC layer to me. Did anyone else hear about such things? Do I need to return this zv5000z, WSXGA, to HP?

This sometimes happens when the LCD is compressed higher in an area. usually happens if the LCD is flexed/torqued slightly when put into the case. Sometimes, if there's something just behind that section of the LCD that's pushing up against it. If t's really noticable under standard useage, HP may consider swapping the LCD, but they may not consider this a problem. If the unit is still within the 30 days, you always do have the option to swap the unit (don't tell them about the LCD, say something else is wrong). You just have to know that the new unit may have other flaws that you may not like. So it mainly comes down to what you want to do. Peronally, I'm VERY picky about my stuff, so I'd send it back and get a new one, but that's just me.

That's the problem - I'm very picky. I have 25 days left out of 30-days. I've heard some people swapping several units, and each new one had a new problem - either ethernet card, or dead pixel or something else, so I'm hesitant to swap. All featuires of my unit work flawelessly, except for that issue with the LCD (again, flaweless screen under normal use, but has a hidden problem with the non-uniform shading).
Anyone have similar hidden LCD defect?!
