I'm beginning to see little chips in the paint, but when I run my finger over hem the feel like nicks of plastic are coming off. The problem only appears on the left side, right where my left hand rests when using the touchpad. I don't wear any jewelry, rings etc. so I'm not really sure where it is coming from.

i was hoping there was no paint but pure metal to avoid crap like this......... -
You don't wear a watch? I know you said you didn't wear jewelry or rings, but if you wear a watch, I could see this happening, as the wrists line up where a watch could scratch/damage the edging. -

If you complain enough and get a case manager, I bet you can get them to send you a replacement cover. I did originally, but had to send mine back, as it wasn't the part I needed. Its not hard to replace ... just a crap-ton of screws. -
edit: sorry not case manager, concierge. -
I have a Gorilla glass Spectre. You know the one that reviews say is glass on three sides and alloy elsewhere. Only thing is the alloy is actually plastic as far as I can tell. I saw a Spectre that had been scratched badly through the sliver painted fake alloy to reveal white plastic of some sort. -
I wish I still had the extra top cover to take a picture as it was metal. The piece I was sent was bent slightly and I bent it back.
Don't believe everything those "concierges" say. For example, my case manager thought the Envy 17 had the red reproduction issue and she was unaware of any software fix being released. And as well as they don't. Their job isn't to know their product. Their job is to make their customer happy, no matter what (see my other post in the main Envy 15 thread about my exchange unit with free extras I've been given/upgraded). Their tech support is even worse, as their resolution is to put you on hold while they look up the "How-To" Guide on HP's intranet to fix your problem.
They may be nice and customer service savvy, but they don't know much about their products, to be honest. Best thing you can do is take apart your Envy and see for yourself.
I don't treat reviews as "gospel", except for the fact that I had the part in my hand a month ago....but here you go, for a product you apparently don't know much about... but I'll bite for a few I found:

"From its bare aluminum chassis to its large touchpad and black chiclet-style keyboard, the Envy 15 unabashedly copies everything that works well for Apple on the MacBook Pro."
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-...ml?tag=contentMain;contentBody;1r#reviewPage1
"Made of aluminum and magnesium, in a dark gunmetal gray with a black base, the original Envy laptops had a subtle pattern of imprinted squares covering the wrist rest and the back of the lid, creating an overall unique signature."
http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/4/2677801/hp-envy-15-review-late-2011
"...the Envy 15 copies rather more desirable traits, starting with the same rock-solid, wonderfully smooth aluminum deck without more than a hint of flex anywhere. "
http://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Envy-15-3040nr-Laptop-Review.72051.0.html
"We hate to be drawing comparisons to the MacBook Pro so early, but the redesigned Envy 15 practically parallels the Apple in many areas from the flat surfaces, leveled thickness from front-to-back (28.2mm) and even the gray coloring scheme used for the shiny but matte aluminum alloy base."
...and from HP directly:

"A super thin (1.11"), light (starting at 5.79 lb.) case with all-new aluminum design"
Your concierge is a moron and doesn't know anything about the products his company sells.
Anyone having chipping problems on their Envy?
