Thanks, it's my first time getting a laptop and the naming schemes have me going crazy lol. Though I was looking for some input if the specs were good for around 800.

    Now onto more research!

That's really not a bad laptop. It has great 1080p screen. Try going on hp.com and try building one of the same laptops see if you get the same price or equal to it.

I am posting from this exact laptop. I got it from the Microsoft Store for a President's Day sale, but now it's the same price on Newegg. I recommend checking there if you want to buy it. I think it will be cheaper and arrive faster than one from HP. Overall, it's a good laptop.

I'm not an expert on screens, but the screen is bright and as a bonus has non-reflective matte coating. Some have complained about reds on the 1080p screen of the Envy, but I can't tell you whether this is the same screen. I like having the 1080p screen space over my old laptop. Windows will default to 125% magnification when you first get the laptop. I decided to keep it on.

I'm actually surprised by the features packed into it: bluetooth, fingerprint reader, beats audio, wireless access point card, and metal casing. The speakers didn't impress me that much, but they're still good. The beats audio software is nice to have if you can set an equalizer.

One downside is cooling: When under load, the CPU can get as hot as mid 70s (Celsius) and spike into the 80s. I believe this temperature to be safe, but I would have liked lower. The only vent is in the top left corner and that is where the laptop heats up. You can hear the fan when you are gaming. I bought the Coolermaster U2 as a cooling pad, but I haven't seen a difference using it. If anyone knows how I should set it up, please share. If you turn on HP Coolsense, you might hear the fan running even when not gaming. I personally turn it off while I'm not gaming and the laptop is quieter.

Graphics: The ATI drivers are terrible. It's recommended that you install the newest ATI drivers over HP's installed drivers. My card is recognized as a 6700 card under these drivers, though I doubt this makes a difference seeing as the 7690XT is a rebranded card.

You may need to right click on the desktop to configure switchable graphics. It might take you a while to figure out if your graphics card even runs. One way to check is using hardware monitor. Under your Intel HD graphics card it will show voltages. If you see 1.05V, your ATI card is running. Intel HD runs at 0.90V. Another minor point is that at 1080p resolution, it might have been nice to have 2GB memory instead of 1GB. Some things like AA eat up graphics memory, but I don't know how much this makes a difference.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Yea I was playing around with the prices a couple of days ago, but the tax killed it for me lol.

Thanks this is a really informative post, too bad you didn't post sooner =/.
I was running low on time and had purchased this one:

    Newegg.com - lenovo IdeaPad Y570 (08623TU) Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

(This runs decently quiet, fast, and quite cool on load, but the 1366x768 screen is a big downer with normal use; there's also a slight problem with the usb 3.0 ports) I'll provide temps when I can.

How vibrant is the screen on the hp?
What's the fps like for your games at 1080p? (I'll prob play some LoL and CS)
    Workmanship-wise, does it feel sturdy?

If I'm able to secure more time, I might just return this one and buy the hp.

The Y570 is great laptop in its own right. The only reason I didn't get it was that I wanted to try a 1080p monitor for extra screen space.

How vibrant is the screen on the hp?

I used HWInfo to find my monitor number: AUO B156HW01 V3

    AUO B156HW01 V3 Overview - Panelook.com

You can look up discussions and reviews of the monitor now that you have the name. I believe this screen has 60% color gamut, 220nits. While it's not the best screen you can get, these boards say nothing but good things and it definitely beats the screens that come with most laptops. Though you might lose some color richness with a matte screen if that worries you.

What's the fps like for your games at 1080p? (I'll prob play some LoL and CS)

I can't tell you much here since the only game I played so far is portal. Try searching this forum for people with the 6770m/7690m and the HD screen and see what they say. The graphics card is a few percent faster than the gt 555m. Chances are you will have to lower the game settings to get good framerates at native res for new games. Then again, LoL and CS may not be a problem at 1080p.

    Workmanship-wise, does it feel sturdy?

The metal casing looks and feels impressive. I'm still unsure whether I trust the hinge. Maybe look at a picture and see what you think. Everything looks and feels fine now, it's just a question of how it holds up in 3 years.
